This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and ambitious registered nurse to join our preassessment team. You will help our Pre Operative service assess and overcome the challenges of preparing patients for a General Anesthetic and complex Local Anesthetic in readiness for elective surgery.
The key role of the successful candidate will be to deliver elements of the 5 core requirements, set by NHSE, carried out by our service. You will be undertaking the preassessment of elective surgical patients, using various systems to obtain accurate medical/surgical history taking and clinical skills. You will manage your own caseload and time to complete clinic appointments assigned to you. You will use your experience and clinical skills to provide information, guidance and support to patients waiting for elective surgery.
- You must have a passion for delivering an excellent patient-focused service.
- Some experience in a Pre-assessment, either ward-based or outpatients.
- Flexibility to travel to different sites.
- Flexibility to work days Monday to Saturday.
- The ability to undertake further development and training as required.
Early screening of the patients' electronically submitted information, and compare with medical records, to identify the correct appointment type the patient would safely need. Where health optimisation is required, make the required referral, in real time. Complete the preassessment of elective surgical patients, either face to face or by telephone, as allocated. Ensuring patients are safely prepared for surgery.
Have/build a diverse broad knowledge base of several specialties needing elective surgery, including Gynaecology, General surgery, Gastroenterology, Urology, Plastics, Ears/Nose/Throat, Breast. Checking patient investigation results, identifying and acting on concerns and/or abnormalities.
- Excellent verbal, non-verbal, multi-computer system use and written communication skills.
- Experience/develop autonomous working.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Be able to demonstrate tact and diplomacy when working with others.
- Teaching and mentorship experience.

About the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust: The post holder will be required to work as a competent member of the Pre Operative assessment team to provide safe and effective high-quality care, as an autonomous practitioner. The post holder will be able to carry out basic clinical investigations such as calculating BMI, taking blood pressure readings, height and weight, blood tests (training will be given) and infection prevention tests, such as MRSA. To work in accordance with the standards set by the Nursing/Midwifery Professional Bodies, and with the Trust Nursing Policies and Guidelines. Be an accountable practitioner, taking every opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence. If required, to take charge of the unit on allocated days.
