I'm working with a well-established Bristol organisation to appoint an experienced Payroll Specialist to take ownership of its monthly payroll function. This is not a payroll administration role. It's an opportunity for an experienced payroll professional who enjoys managing the full payroll cycle, understands the numbers behind the process, and is comfortable working in a hands-on, relatively manual payroll environment.
The role is offered on a 30-hour-per-week basis, ideally across four days, although candidates with additional finance experience, particularly Sage Accounts knowledge, may also be considered on a full-time basis. An early start would be a significant advantage to facilitate a thorough handover, but I would welcome your application if you do have a notice period.
What you'll be doing:
- Managing end-to-end monthly payroll for approximately 200+ employees across two payrolls
- Processing starters, leavers, contractual changes and payroll amendments
- Administering SSP, SMP, pensions and statutory payments
- Processing overtime, travel expenses and additional payments
- Completing RTI submissions and ensuring legislative compliance
- Performing manual payroll calculations where required
- Preparing and posting payroll journals
- Completing payroll reconciliations and payroll-to-finance reconciliations
What we're looking for:
- Proven end-to-end payroll experience
- Hands-on Sage Payroll experience (strongly preferred)
- Thorough understanding of payroll legislation and processes
- Robust experience working within a manual payroll environment
- Confidence with payroll journals, reconciliations and payroll accounting processes
Additional skills that would be useful:
- Purchase Ledger or Accounts Payable experience
- Payroll finance reconciliation experience
- Journal posting and cost recharge knowledge
This is a fantastic opportunity for somebody who enjoys payroll for what it really is: understanding calculations, solving problems, maintaining accuracy and being trusted to own a critical business process. If you are an independent and confident payroll professional looking for the next step in your career, then this could be the perfect role for you. You will need to have a flexible attitude to your role but have the initiative and drive to pursue process improvements and strive for perfection. In return, you'll be joining a supportive organisation with a flexible hybrid working arrangement, a collaborative finance team and a role that offers genuine autonomy from day one.
