An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Maintenance Technician to join our team on a full time, permanent basis

The Estates department at both Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals has a group of highly skilled electrical / mechanical technicians, plumbing engineers, creative building craft persons, and dedicated support staff.

We are looking for a highly motivated and professional individual who has the ability to prioritise workloads and identify improvements to operational systems and management processed in order to increase departmental efficiencies.

The successful candidate will provide technical support services for the reactive/planned specialist maintenance work on a variety of hospital plant and equipment to ensure compliance with all statutory requirements, codes of practice, guidance notes and trust procedures, to a high standard.

  • Applicants should have served a4-yearrecognised and registered craft apprenticeship and will have gained an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering and possess equivalent previous hospital maintenance experience.
  • The post holder would be expected to carry out maintenance duties in an efficient and effective manner to support the successful delivery of a customer focused estate maintenance service for the Trust.
  • Perform routine duties which may be delegated by the maintenance team leader with the minimum of supervision and have a flexible and positive approach to change.
  • The applicant must understand and competently work on a wide range of Building Services systems with the ability to service, test, diagnose, and repair mechanical / electrical, plant and equipment.
  • The successful candidate must be able to read and interpret technical drawing and manuals, as well as have an understanding of electrical / mechanical installation plans and drawings.
  • Applicants must have the ability to deal with new situations as they arise and pass on relevant knowledge to the team

Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients.

We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

  • Management Responsibilities
  • Laise with trust management, Nursing personnel, Support personnel, Statutory bodies and specialist contractors to advise on the best course of action to be taken in situations as they arise and carry out recommendations where this is within their capabilities.
  • Follow and ensure compliance with all trust procedures and policies including Health & Safety and Risk management.
  • Carry out risk assessments for work carried out by self.
  • Participate in the management on call system and be the first point of contact for out of hours emergencies.

Manage in an effective manner the emergency call by taking the appropriate action.

Escalate any situations to more senior managers as necessary.

  • Leadership Responsibilities
  • Lead and communicate relevant specialist knowledge to other estates staff as and when necessary.
  • Carry out priority assessment of workload and carry out tasks according to priority.
  • Carry out installation, repair, service, and calibration work on a wide range of complex, mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment, building services and plant in accordance with relevant Health technical memoranda, water bylaws, British standards, code of practise and legislation.
  • Actively participate in the management, and operation of planned preventive maintenance schemes.
  • Undertake the full range of craftsman’s duties, using hand and power tools and test equipment.

Carry out test and fault diagnostic procedures using electronic instruments both in site and in workshop.

  • Carry out manual handling of heavy objects (25kg) as required (after suitable training) to keep plant and equipment running as required.
  • Carry out cleaning, decontamination, specialist fault diagnosis and repairs of patient related and specialised equipment.
  • Communication Responsibilities
  • The post holder shall liaise with patients, nursing staff, management, contractors and other support staff to ascertain the extent of problems and priorities.
  • The post holder shall produce a record of the results of equipment testing in an appropriate form and give the results to the site management.
  • Carry a radio or similar communication device as and when required.
  • Training Responsibilities
  • The post holder will undertake specialist mandatory equipment training to enable the trust to meet its obligations under its policies and legislation.
  • Update Knowledge of new techniques/equipment as necessary.
  • The post holder will also cascade train either other estates as and when necessary.
  • General Responsibilities
  • Participate in the technician on call system covering all properties maintained by the trust, driving to the requires sites as necessary.
  • The daily Technician is expected to cover for periods of shift technicians’ absence.
