An exciting role has arisen for a Perinatal Peer Support Worker based at The Margaret Oates Mother and Baby Unit. We are looking for a Perinatal Peer Support Worker, with your own lived experience of perinatal mental illness, having reached a level of recovery that allows you to use your experiences to help others.

As a Perinatal Peer Support Worker, it is essential that you have your own lived experience of perinatal mental illness, and have reached a level of recovery that allows you to use your experiences to help others. The Margaret Oates Mother and Baby Unit is accredited by the Perinatal Quality Network within the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and provides high quality assessment, care and treatment of mothers, from 32 weeks gestation to one year post partum, accompanied by their babies who are experiencing a severe mental illness.

As an integral and highly valued member of the multi-disciplinary team, the PSW will provide nurturing peer support and practical assistance to mothers using services in order for them to regain control over their lives and nurture their relationship with their new baby. Within a relationship of mutuality and information sharing, they will promote choice, self-determination and positive living for both the mothers they support and their wider family networks. This will include helping mothers connect or re-connect with their local communities and establish their own coping strategies.

The PSW will act as a positive role model within the team and an ambassador of recovery for the Trust with external agencies and partner organisations. There is also an expectation that PSWs will be involved in the ongoing development of peer roles in the Trust including the Peer Support Training Programme and evaluation.
