Medacs Healthcare is working in partnership with Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) to recruit a Consultant in General Anaesthesia to join one of the busiest, most advanced, and most diverse anaesthetic departments in the UK. About the Role

  • As a Consultant Anaesthetist, you will join a large, highly skilled team providing anaesthetic services across a wide range of surgical specialties.
  • NNUH is a major tertiary centre with 28 theatres, a dedicated paediatric theatre complex, a new elective orthopaedic centre, and one of the busiest emergency theatre services in the country.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant‑level anaesthetic care across elective and emergency theatres.
  • Deliver peri‑operative assessment and optimisation for high‑risk surgical patients.
  • Support major surgical specialties including thoracic, colorectal, plastics, vascular, orthopaedics, ENT, urology, and paediatrics.
  • Contribute to MDTs, governance meetings, and service planning.
  • Supervise and support trainees, fellows, and anaesthesia associates.
  • Participate in audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance.

About the Department & Setting

  • New paediatric theatre complex (opened 2023).
  • New elective orthopaedic surgical centre (NANOC) with expansion planned.
  • Dedicated regional anaesthesia service and Ambulatory Procedure Unit.
  • Major trauma unit with plans to become a second Major Trauma Centre.
  • Strong research culture with NIHR Clinical Research Facility status.

What We're Looking For

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
  • FRCA (or equivalent).
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthesia (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR).
  • Broad experience in general anaesthesia across major specialties.
  • Ability to participate in the general on‑call rota.
  • Strong communication and teamworking skills.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • DBS/PVG check (or willingness to complete).
  • Subspecialty interest aligned with departmental needs.
  • Experience in teaching, research, or quality improvement.
  • Interest in trauma, regional anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, or robotic surgery.
