Floor Layer Build a long-term career — not just your next job
We're expanding our flooring team across South Wales as work grows across our long-term facilities maintenance contracts.
Before we get into the day-to‑day, here's what really matters
Career progression — the real kind
At Sherwoods, progression isn't rushed and it isn't based on empty promises.
Several members of our senior leadership team started with us as apprentices.
They learned the trade properly, proved themselves over time, and progressed because they were ready — not because of a job title being dangled in front of them.
That's exactly how we still do things today.
- We won't promise you a supervisor role in three months. What we will offer is:
- A stable, growing business
- Clear opportunities as the company expands
- Support, training, and trust as you develop
- A long-term career path if you want one
- If you're good at what you do, committed, and want to grow, we'll back you.
- Why this role is different
- This is a role for experienced floor layers who want to settle in and build something, not hop between short-term jobs.
- Planned work with realistic schedules
- Trusted to manage your day once on site
- No micromanagement, no unnecessary pressure
- A business that hires ahead of demand, not after people burn out
- What you'll be doing
- Planned and reactive flooring work across client sites — from routine tasks and spot repairs to small projects
- Working with a variety of floor coverings, including vinyl, carpet and safety flooring
- Minor repairs to wooden sub‑floor structures
- Estimating works, with full detail of scope and materials
- Accurately recording completed works and any follow‑ups via our job management system
- Working to a realistic, pre‑planned schedule, with out‑of‑hours and on‑call duties as required
- What you'll need
- Experience as a floor layer, with knowledge of fitting a variety of floor coverings including vinyl, carpet, and cap and cove
- Experience within the facilities maintenance sector
- Strong communication and relationship management skills
- A proactive approach to problem solving, and a passion for passing on knowledge
- Carpentry and basic plumbing skills would be a distinct advantage
- GCSE Maths and English at grade C/4 (or equivalent)
- A full UK driving licence
- Willingness to undertake an enhanced DBS check
- Floor laying qualifications or an apprenticeship, project management experience, and H&S training (e. g. IOSH) are all a bonus, but not essential.
- What you'll get
- Salary up to £34,320 depending on experience (realistic earnings nearer £40,000 when door to door travel is included)
- Company van + fuel card
- Overtime available (never forced)
Why Sherwoods?
