Applications are invited to apply for a Specialty Doctor post in General Surgery at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This post involves working on a resident on-call rota covering Emergency Surgery, so depending on the agreement, this post would normally exceed the basic 10 PA full-time contract.
The General Surgery CSU consists of 21 Consultants, 1 Associate Specialist, 12 Specialty Doctors, 2 Trust Doctors, 3 Senior House Officers and 12 FY1s. The department has a strong history of developing and supporting Specialty Doctors working towards achieving Specialist Registration. All Medical staff employed by the Trust are expected to comply with hospital health and safety policies, clinical governance and other risk management policies.
This post will involve working on a resident on-call rota, as well as other duties such as day-to-day running of the ward and, when required, assisting Consultants in theatre. The registrars in the general surgical team cross-cover 4 theatre sessions (including robotic theatre), clinics and endoscopy sessions.
The successful candidate will be expected to have GMC Registration and Medical degree & FRCS/MRCS or equivalent. Experience at Registrar level in General and Emergency Surgery is desirable. They should have the ability to manage common surgical emergencies.
The successful applicant will be expected to participate in teaching both under and postgraduate students associated with the University of Buckingham and will also be expected to support colleagues doing these activities as part of his or her arranged job plan.

Main responsibilities:
Experience/Training:
- Experience at Registrar level in General and Emergency Surgery
- Ability to manage common surgical emergencies including operative management
- Adequate experience of the speciality of General Surgery to provide effective and safe management of outpatients and elective patients
Clinical Skills:
- Experience in the management of patients with general surgical problems.
- Understanding of clinical risk management
- Validated logbook with summary documentation of surgical exposure
- Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement & prioritise clinical need.
- Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence and evidence of the development of diagnostic skills and clinical judgement.
