You will join a team of 6 Consultants and 2 Specialty Doctors who have an interest in General Respiratory Medicine, Sleep and Lung Cancer. The wider team is supported by Resident Doctors, MTI, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Respiratory Physiologists and a Physiotherapist. There is a dedicated visiting Thoracic Surgeon from Harefield Hospital; we have Oncology and Palliative Care support based locally; and excellent links for tertiary care with Oxford, Papworth and The Brompton Hospital. The Cancer Centre at Milton Keynes University Hospital is expanding. We provide on-site radiotherapy. We envisage a rapid expansion of the services we provide regionally. We have successfully initiated Targeted Lung Health Check cancer screening services and are looking to bolster our diagnostics, including the development of navigational Bronchoscopy services. We have a mature Sleep Service and initiate non-invasive domiciliary ventilation in partnership with the Oxford Sleep & Ventilation Service.
Clinical duties and responsibilities
The post holder will contribute to all aspects of the Respiratory service at MKUH, including provision of acute and elective care of adult Respiratory and General Medical patients in conjunction with community services and regional specialist centres. Respiratory Consultants also support the Respiratory in-reach services, triage daily e-referrals from Primary Care and provide advice and guidance for GPs. The post holder will attend weekly MDTs for Respiratory Radiology, Lung Cancer and Lung Nodules. They will contribute to the Sleep MDT if required. The post holder will lead outpatient clinics in general Respiratory, Cancer 2WW and Sleep Services.
Inpatient Work and On Call
At present we have two Respiratory Wards with 57 beds (including 8 non-HDU NIV beds). As a Bed Holder you will provide 3 Ward Rounds and 2 Board Rounds each week, providing cross-cover for colleagues when required. There is a formal On Call service (frequency 1:27). There is a weekend/Bank Holiday Ward Round commitment for the Respiratory Ward, and reviews of inpatients including the Medical Admissions Unit as needed (currently 1:6 weekends).

- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- CCT in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine (or within 6 months of achieving this).
- Independent practitioner for diagnostic procedures (EBUS, Bronchoscopy & Thoracoscopy).
- Proven experience in delivering high-quality respiratory care.
- A commitment to innovation, service development, and patient-centred care.
- An interest in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and delivery of undergraduate curriculum for University of Buckingham Medical School will be expected, encouraged and duly supported through SPA activity.
The successful candidate will work alongside the team of Respiratory Consultants and will be expected to participate in the day-to-day activities of the department in cooperation with the rest of the medical staff, to provide Respiratory Medicine support via ward referrals and consults to patients requiring Respiratory inpatient input across MKUH and also provide outpatient Respiratory clinics seeing both new and follow up patients, ensuring all patients have an appropriate treatment plan. This includes completing relevant administrative duties.
