Matron for Professional Practice | Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

We are recruiting a midwifery matron for professional practice who shares our vision to provide consistently outstanding care to our women babes and families.

This role has multiple priorities with the safety of mothers and babies and excellent patient experience as its main goal, achieved by ensuring a highly trained, competent and well‑staffed workforce.

It will focus on staff wellbeing and staff development, effective teamworking, an open and honest approach to maternity specific training and development with a strong focus on evidence-based care and learning from incidents.

Working in partnership with the Director of Midwifery and the Senior Leadership Team, the professional practice matron will ensure that our midwifery, nursing and support staff have the skills to provide a safe, high quality service to women and babies.

  • The matron for professional practice will provide professional, clinical, and operational leadership to ensure high standards of midwifery and nursing practice, education, and staff development within a large tertiary maternity and neonatal service.

Acting as an expert practitioner and visible role model, the post holder will promote a positive learning culture, professional accountability, and continuous improvement in care delivery.

  • The role includes line management and leadership of the professional development midwives, fetal well‑being midwives, and clinical placement support midwives.

The Matron will also maintain a professional link with the Neonatal Educators to support collaborative working and alignment of maternity and neonatal education where appropriate.

  • The matron will ensure that clinical practice, education provision, and student support processes are safe, evidence-based, and aligned with the standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Council and national priorities set by NHS England.
  • The post holder will maintain robust oversight of statutory and mandatory training compliance across maternity services.
  • The post holder will work collaboratively with the senior midwifery and nursing leadership team and multidisciplinary colleagues, including obstetric, neonatal, and anaesthetic education leads, to ensure accurate and auditable training records, providing clear governance assurance.
