The child is a 14-year-old autistic boy.
He has a very close and secure relationship with his family, particularly his mum, brother, and sister.
At present, he has not gone out independently with unfamiliar adults, and it takes him time to build trust with new adults.
Changes in routine or separation from his mum can be distressing for him. If he is unable to find his mum, he may become anxious and will try to look for her.
When emotionally overwhelmed, he may
- Become upset or distressed
- Have limited awareness of personal safety
- Attempt to run away quickly
- Display some challenging behaviours, such as head-banging towards others or pulling hair when very distressed
These behaviours are linked to emotional dysregulation and anxiety, not intent to harm.
The child requires close supervision, calm reassurance, clear boundaries, and consistent support to help him feel safe and regulated.
- Building trust will be a gradual process, and support will initially focus on:
- Working alongside family members at the beginning
- Helping the child feel safe, understood, and secure
The family will share complete guidance, routines, and behaviour support strategies. The PA will not be expected to manage situations without support or preparation.
- Languages
- Hobbies and Interests
He enjoys familiar and predictable activities. His interests include
- Going to shops to buy toys
- Playing with Thomas & Friends trains
- Other Relevant Information
- A gradual introduction is important. Initial sessions may take place with a family member present to help the child feel safe and build trust.
- The PA will work closely with the family and follow agreed routines and guidance.
- Close supervision is required at all times due to limited safety awareness.
- The PA should be physically able to keep up with a child who may run quickly.
- Experience supporting children in the community is an advantage.
- Ongoing communication and feedback will be encouraged.
- Ability to speak Chinese (Mandarin) is desirable to support communication with parents.
- The role is subject to Enhanced DBS checks and references.
- This position is funded through Direct Payments.
