This appointment is for an exciting clinical position in an active and friendly Clinical Microbiology/Infection service. We are looking for a Consultant in Medical Microbiology or Microbiology & Infectious Disease to take up an 8PA consultant post as a replacement to join our existing team of consultants.

The team is supported by two excellent OPAT nurses, 2 HSST trainees, 1 STP trainee, 1 clinical scientist, 2 LTFT SpRs and 2 FY2s (one shared with GU medicine). The department operates a two-consultant duty model during normal working hours with one covering Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH), one covering Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester (RHCH), as well as providing advice to primary care. Authorisation of laboratory results is shared between the consultant team and a clinical scientist. The laboratory scientific team are based in the Microbiology laboratory at Basingstoke Hospital. There is an essential services laboratory at RHCH which performs blood culture incubation, respiratory PCR and a number of other diagnostic tests to support rapid infection and infection control decision making.

Clinical duties include the following:

  • Undertake result reporting in core hours
  • Respond in a timely manner to clinical and laboratory enquiries (in line with RCPath KPIs)
  • Out of hours clinical advice on call on a 1:7 rota including weekends, week nights and bank holidays. Remote access is available to allow remote interrogation of LIMS and other Trust electronic systems (radiology, prescribing) when on call.
  • Ensure that important findings rapidly reach the requesting clinicians and advise regarding appropriate action
  • Be involved in the clinical management of patients in the hospital and community. This includes both daily ward rounds to ITU and complex infection patients.
  • Supervise and support the junior doctors and trainee clinical scientist in Microbiology as appropriate to their stage of training and needs.
  • Liaise with the infection prevention nurses and DIPC and ensure day to day input as appropriate to operational infection prevention work including outbreak investigation and management, should this be required.
  • Support the leads for antibiotic usage, Infection Control and department and Pathology management as appropriate.
