To support the head of department in the development and delivery of a high-quality diagnostic lung function service across our sites. To carry out the full range of respiratory investigations and ensure the highest standards are maintained and promoted. To participate in the department's research, development and audit activities.
The post holder will be predominantly based at the Finchley Memorial Hospital site, however they will also need to be flexible and occasionally work across sites (Royal Free, Barnet & Chase Farm Hospitals) as and when deemed necessary. This post offers the opportunity to expand your skills and advance your career in respiratory physiology within a large specialist teaching hospital. Depending on experience, the candidate may need to complete competency assessments for various tests and procedures carried out in the department. Applicants who require further training and development, or those who are working towards gaining the skills required for the post may be considered at a lower grade.
The postholder will be expected to consistently demonstrate behaviours aligned to the Trust’s shared commitments, embedding compassion, inclusion, integrity and excellence in their day-to-day practice. Finchley Memorial Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), occasional requirement to attend other Royal Free London sites. The CDC runs Monday to Sunday, from 8am to 8pm, there is a requirement that the post holder can work shifts within the opening times. Finchley Memorial CDC works in close collaboration with its sister site Wood Green CDC, hosted by Whittington Health NHS Trust. As the service develops there is a potential requirement for staff working at either site to cross cover.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Always maintain a professional behaviour and always promote a positive image of Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, in line with the Trust’s Shared Commitments.
- To demonstrate good communication skills when dealing with patients, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team utilising sensitivity, empathy and ability to manage conflict.
- To perform a wide range of respiratory function tests listed below:
- Gas transfer measurements
- Lung volume measurements using Body Plethysmography and Nitrogen Washout
- Airways resistance
- Bronchodilator response tests
- Blood gas analysis
- Field walk tests
- Respiratory muscle testing
- Any other test deemed necessary by the head of department
- To perform Microvascular tests listed below:
- Performing quality assured microvascular imaging including nailfold capillaroscopy and infrared thermography.
- Download of and Microvascular imaging data.
- Take responsibility for the functioning, calibration and quality assurance of measurements on complex specialised instruments, and maintain calibration records and audits of work activity.
- Communicate test procedures clearly and sympathetically, to obtain co-operation and best effort from patients.
- To communicate effectively with other members of the trust in all aspects of patient care.
- Be personally responsible for the adherence to the correct procedure for the disinfection of equipment, adhering closely to local and Trust infection control procedures, quality standards, set guidelines and risk assessments.
- Triage referrals from other trusts and GPs (via ERS), and email/send results back to other trusts/GPs.
- Actively involved with service improvement/audits (patient feedback and IQIPS accreditation).
- Using clinical and technical experience, the post holder must be able to identify complex equipment and procedure faults, to ensure that patient results are accurate and safe.
- Responsible for stock control and ordering to maintain adequate stock levels.
- Performing routine maintenance, calibration and quality control of all laboratory equipment.
- To perform accurately record and interpret patient observations - temperature, pulse, blood pressure.
- To conduct clinical duties in line with internally defined proficiency standards.
- With the benefit of educational support and supervision, to successfully work towards, gain and maintain any appropriate certification of competency such as through assessment by a relevant professional body or completion of the appropriate apprenticeship.
- To provide education to patients, relatives and carers.
