This role is a senior member of the team with professional accountability for estate mechanical infrastructure. The post holder will support operational teams in developing the estate using ERIC/PAM data, national policy standards, HTM/HBN guidance and industry best practice.
The role exists to safeguard patient and staff wellbeing by overseeing statutory compliance, risk management and technical standards across all mechanical assets, including:
- Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
- Medical gas pipeline systems (MGPS)
- Steam and pressure systems
- Water systems (domestic, ventilation and hygiene-critical systems)
- Pressure vessels and boiler plant
- Chillers, air handling units, and ventilation plant
- Lifts (mechanical aspects)
- Plumbing and drainage systems
The post holder will act as a senior technical authority, supporting Heads of Service in delivering a robust estates compliance framework, driving continuous improvement and contributing to sustainability, energy efficiency and system resilience. The post holder will demonstrate inclusive, compassionate and anti-racist leadership aligned to NHS leadership frameworks.
- Lead the mechanical infrastructure stewardship of the estate, ensuring it is legally compliant, safe and with appropriate levels of resilience
- Drive a safety culture with the team and with all suppliers to ensure the delivery of a safe, healthy and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors
- Lead a team of professional, technical, trade staff and a range of service and specialist contractors
- Ensure compliance with all HTMs, HBNs, SFG20, British Standards, ERIC, PAM and statutory health & safety requirements, including testing programmes and Trust duties relating to infection control, safeguarding, equality, and information governance
- Leadership Standards (Aligned to NHS Management and Leadership Framework) - Lead with compassion, integrity and accountability, making clear, fair and timely decisions and taking responsibility for outcomes
- Create psychologically safe, inclusive teams where people are treated with dignity and respect, concerns are listened to, and discriminatory behaviour is challenged
