We are delighted to offer this exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and self-motivated consultant to join our department. This will be a 4 month contract for sabbatical cover. The successful candidate will cover general theatre lists as well as Labour ward and burns theatre. The candidate will participate in the on-call rota for Obstetric and General Anaesthetics approx. 1:16 band A (low frequency), once fully orientated to the department. The on call rota activity is remunerated at 1PA.

This is a full time post of 10PA, divided into 8.5PA direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5PA supporting professional activities (SPA). Theatre sessions are typically delivered flexibly across the weekdays, although the department may be able to accommodate some requests with regards to a fixed element to the work pattern. Some Theatre sessions may be delivered on weekends.

Separate on-call rotas are operated for general (including labour ward), paediatric anaesthesia and Intensive Care.

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of England's top-performing and safest trusts. We operate two main acute hospital sites—Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital—along with award-winning clinics across North West London. Our nearly 7,500 staff care for a diverse population of 1.5 million, providing full clinical services, including maternity, A&E, and children’s services, plus specialist HIV and sexual health clinics. The Care Quality Commission rates us 'Good' in safety, effectiveness, care, and responsiveness, and 'Outstanding' in leadership and resource use.

We continually invest in our facilities, including a £30m expansion of critical care at Chelsea and Westminster and an £80m Ambulatory Diagnostic Centre at West Middlesex. We welcome applications for flexible working arrangements, accommodating requests where possible to support our staff and patient needs. The Trust is committed to equality and welcomes applications from all, regardless of background. Adjustments can be made for disabled candidates. Early application is advised as vacancies may close once sufficient applications are received. If you haven’t heard from us within three weeks of the closing date, your application was likely unsuccessful. Employment is subject to a six-month probationary period.

Some roles may require weekend shifts at multiple sites. The expectation is that the Trust and the post holder will work together to benefit the patients, and individuals will view the job plan as a guide which may be amended in line with service changes. The formulation of a job plan should not prevent a flexible approach to work to ensure the efficient running of the department. The Trust will aim wherever possible to keep the job plan activity to a minimum consistent with achieving the best quality patient care and ensuring that members of staff work in accordance with the European Working Time Regulations. Job plans in excess of 10 PAs will be subject to annual review to ensure that all activity contained in the job plan is clinically and organisationally necessary.

Proposed initial job plan: This is a full time post of 10 PA, divided into 8.5 PA direct clinical care and 1.5 PA supporting professional activities. SPA time is given to support personal CPD, preparation for GMC appraisal, governance and quality improvement activities as required for successful appraisal. The Post holder will provide clinical care in Adult Anaesthesia on theatre lists, labour ward, endoscopy, and radiology and in burns theatre, including weekend lists.

We are supportive of Less Than Full Time working in the department and would be open to discussion with the preferred candidate if they wished for LTFT working pattern.

This advert closes on Wednesday 19 Aug 2026.
