We have an exciting opportunity for an individual to join our Liverpool FC team as a Associate, Lead Data Engineer.
You will help to deliver, maintain, and enhance the club’s enterprise data platform and data warehouse services.
You will combine technical leadership with practical development, designing and supporting scalable data pipelines, ETL processes, data models, APIs, and AWS-based data solutions.
Working across technologies including AWS S3, Lambda, Fargate, Glue, Redshift, SQL, and Python, you will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, performance, and ongoing evolution of the club’s data capabilities.
You will also provide technical oversight and day-to-day guidance to offshore development teams, ensuring solutions are well-designed, thoroughly tested, aligned with architectural standards, and maintainable for the long term.
What will you be doing?
- Technical Delivery & Engineering Standards
- Ensure high-quality delivery of data engineering solutions through effective design, development, testing, code review, documentation, and operational readiness.
- Provide technical oversight and guidance to offshore development teams, ensuring solutions meet Liverpool FC's engineering and architecture standards.
- Support technical decision-making, identify risks, and drive continuous improvements in data engineering practices, quality, and reliability.
- Contribute to the design and evolution of the data warehouse, data models, and overall data architecture.
- Translate business and technical requirements into scalable, maintainable data solutions.
- Support data governance, lineage, quality, and performance best practices across the platform.
- Develop and maintain data pipelines, ETL processes, APIs, and data platform services.
- Work with AWS technologies including S3, Lambda, Fargate, Glue, and Redshift, alongside SQL and Python.
- Deliver reliable data ingestion, transformation, and reporting solutions that support analytics, operational insight, and decision-making.
- Troubleshoot and resolve data quality, performance, and production support issues.
- Data Quality & Operational Reliability
- Implement validation, reconciliation, and monitoring processes to ensure trusted, accurate data.
- Maintain reliable and observable production data services through effective logging, alerting, and incident management.
- Investigate failures, perform root cause analysis, and document operational procedures and support processes.
- Working with Distributed Teams
- Provide day-to-day technical leadership and mentorship to nearshore and offshore delivery teams.
- Review and challenge solutions to ensure maintainability, performance, and alignment with delivery standards.
- Support planning, refinement, and prioritisation of data engineering activities.
- Team Contribution
- Collaborate with stakeholders, product owners, developers, data teams, and third-party partners.
- Maintain technical documentation and share knowledge across the team.
- Support knowledge transfer from external partners and contribute to the growth of internal data engineering capability.
Who are we looking for?
- Extensive experience in senior data engineering, data warehousing, and ETL development roles.
- Strong knowledge of data modelling, transformation, quality management, and cloud-based data engineering platforms.
- Solid understanding of software engineering best practices including version control, testing, documentation, and maintainability.
- Experience working in Agile environments and collaborating with offshore, nearshore, or third-party teams.
- Ability to provide technical leadership, challenge design decisions, and ensure solutions are secure, scalable, supportable, and high quality.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Familiarity with Jira and Confluence for project and delivery management.
Essential Functional / Technical Skills
- Advanced SQL skills covering optimisation, transformation, modelling, validation, and reconciliation.
- Strong Python development skills for data engineering, automation, ETL, and API integrations.
- Hands-on experience with AWS data services including S3, Glue, Redshift, Lambda, and Fargate, or equivalent technologies.
- Experience developing and supporting APIs and cloud-based data platforms.
- Proven capability in data quality management, production support, and data pipeline operations.
- Experience with Git-based version control, CI/CD practices, deployment processes, and operational support.
- Experience leading or overseeing offshore and nearshore delivery teams.
- Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform.
- Experience with Java or other backend programming languages.
- Understanding of cloud security, including IAM, access management, and secrets management.
- Knowledge of data governance, lineage, catalogue, BI, and analytics tools.
- Experience in high-volume sectors such as e-commerce, media, sport, consumer, or membership organisations.
- Expertise in observability, monitoring, alerting, and operational excellence for data platforms and pipelines.
