The Orthopaedic department is based in two hospitals, Hull Royal Infirmary where acute services are based and Castle Hill Hospital. Hull University Teaching Hospitals and the Orthopaedic department has 26 consultants and is a major trauma centre. Hull is a tertiary referral centre for trauma and specialist services including limb reconstruction and bone infections.
The Limb Reconstruction (LR) and bone infection unit has 3 consultants, 2 clinical fellows, 2 research fellows, 1 academic lecturer, and 1 specialist nurse and physiotherapist. The bone infection unit consists of 2 orthopaedic surgeons, 3 plastic surgeons, 1 radiologist, and an infectious diseases consultant. The LR and bone infection unit is a referral centre for the entire East Yorkshire and also treats some patients from Mid Yorkshire, accepting referrals from across the country.
The LR fellow will attend elective and trauma theatres, clinics, bone infection MDT, and day-to-day care of LR and bone infection patients across the entire unit. The LR fellow will liaise across the specialities to provide optimum care to LR and bone infection patients. The LR fellow will undertake research and join in ongoing research. Audit and research would be an integral part of the job. The LR fellow would be responsible for all LR and bone infection patients and may, in certain situations, provide support for other patients in the department. The LR fellow would be part of the decision-making team and would be trained and supported for independent decision-making.
