Are you passionate about improving and developing the pharmacy service to optimise patient care whilst pursuing an interest in medicines information? If so, we are looking for passionate, creative, motivated and patient focused pharmacists to join our team. UHL comprises three acute teaching hospitals and is one of the largest Trusts in the country, serving over a million residents of Leicestershire and Rutland and providing tertiary services on a national level. You will be working within our regional Medicines Information service and also participating in the delivery of our clinical pharmacy service.
The roles advertised will be a 50:50 split with the following specialties:
- Respiratory
- Renal
- Cardiology
- Vascular
To participate in the delivery of optimum pharmaceutical care to patients served by the clinical directorate on specified ward(s) / clinics and deliver a level of clinical input commensurate with the grade. Prescribe and review medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to patient needs and in accordance with evidence-based practice and national and practice protocols, and within scope of practice.
Provide expert evaluated medicines information and advice in response to complex enquiries where answers may not be available to promote the safe, effective and economic use of medicinal products and optimising individual patient therapy. Contribute to the management of the patient helpline to answer medicines related queries. Actively pursue audit, research and development within the CMG and the department. Publicise the results of such work through presentations and publications. Assist with the training and development of staff.

We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic pharmacist who wishes to develop medicines information and skills and knowledge in two dynamic, progressive and innovative teams. For the Respiratory, Renal, Cardiology and Vascular (RRCV) role, medicines optimisation is at the heart of interactions with the patients. Patients present with a range of acute and complex cardiorespiratory conditions. This team has well established links with specialist clinical teams and works closely with them to provide support to these patients.
The post holder will be required to deliver clinical services to specialist cardiac, respiratory, renal, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery wards, as well as contribute to the development of the team within RRCV. The post is based in the Midlands Medicines Information (MI) Centre at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, where the MI team strives to provide great training, development opportunities and varied experience so team members are able to enjoy the role and further their careers.
The main duties of the MI role are:
- To provide and supervise the day-to-day operational aspects of the Midlands (Leicestershire) Medicines Information Service.
- To support members of the healthcare professions (in primary and secondary care) to ensure the safe, effective and economic use of medicinal products in patients through the proactive and reactive provision of evaluated, accurate and up to date information and advice.
- Provide expert specialist advice to healthcare professions and the public on drugs in lactation as part of the UK Drugs in Lactation Advisory Service (specialist training provided).
- To assist in the provision of our medicines helpline service to selected specialty areas once these patients have been discharged.
- Helping with the training of others (qualified pharmacists and trainees) in the specialty of Medicines Information.
You should have previous experience of working in the medicines information specialty as a trainee or fully-qualified pharmacist. We strongly advise any potential applicants to contact the MI team to learn about the services we provide and if possible, come along and visit us in person. You will also hold or be working towards a postgraduate diploma in Clinical Pharmacy (or equivalent). Post holders will be expected to contribute towards evening, on-call and weekend rotas.
Previous UHL Clinical / MI split post holders have developed into highly valuable pharmacists with excellent clinical skills and knowledge of how to find answers to medicines-related queries which makes them excellent pharmacists with a breadth of problem-solving abilities.
