Locum Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care | University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

Responsibility for the core consultant activity of day-to-day running and leadership of the clinical activities in the paediatric intensive care. These are a continued clinical presence in the units during the day for ward rounds, emergency and post-operative admissions when on for PICU. Participate in network activities related to critical care. This includes organising network teaching activities where requested and liaising with one or more of the critical care network referring centres.

Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally. In line with GMC Good Medical Practice, it is the responsibility of the post-holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work.

Two consultants are on call at all times for intensive care, giving each Unit (general and cardiac) separate and independent consultant cover and a third on call during the day to provide support. The service is consultant led, and often consultant delivered, depending on the clinical acuity of patients and the experience of the middle grade clinical staff.

This is a locum post to cover maternity cover for 9 months. The current contractual commitment is for 10 core programmed activities per week, with additional 1 PA. The average weekly PA allocations are: 9DCC programmed activities, including 0.5PA for patient administration. 1.5 SPA for CPD, audit, mandatory training, Revalidation etc. to be taken flexibly.

Whole time consultants within the Trust are allocated 1.5 PA’s for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) in order to support the requirements of revalidation, which include activities such as participating in audit, CPD and mandatory training. Up to a further 1 PA may be made available for SPA by mutual agreement with the CMG as part of the job planning process. This must constitute appropriate verifiable SPA activity that supports an individual’s professional development and provides benefit to UHL.

The post-holder will participate in medical audit, the Trust’s clinical governance processes, and CPD (included in the job plan), with mandatory attendance at audit and governance meetings. The role also includes clinical management, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate, and compliance with the Trust’s standing orders and financial instructions.

About the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust: The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement. The post-holder is expected to participate in teaching and training of junior staff and other clinical staff groups. The appointee will also have supervision responsibilities for junior medical staff within the specialty. If appropriate the post-holder will be named in the contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.

The post-holder will participate actively in research relevant to paediatric intensive care including the development and delivery of studies within the directorate. There will be opportunities to act as Principal Investigator for NIHR portfolio studies and to support a research-active culture within the service. The role also includes participation in audit and quality improvement activities, and contributing to the development of teaching and research in collaboration with the University of Leicester.

The post-holder is expected to fulfil the requirements of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health CPD scheme (or equivalent), with CPD supported within the job plan and mandatory attendance at audit and governance meetings.
