University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) is offering a unique opportunity for a Fellow in Clinical Research at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. The Clinical Research Fellow will play a key role in the delivery and development of dermatology research within UHL and at the University of Manchester, contributing at a level expected of a registrar (ST3+) with increasing autonomy. The post holder will support a portfolio of clinical trials and investigator-led studies including at the Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of Manchester, while maintaining a defined level of clinical responsibility. This role is designed to support progression towards dermatology specialty training by developing advanced clinical, academic, and leadership skills within an NHS research environment.
The weekly timetable for the role will include:
- 32 hours: Cutaneous research clinics, administrative duties and academic working
- 8 hours: Research support for the EPIDERM reporting scheme at the Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of Manchester
In addition, there will be opportunities, depending on competencies, to:
- Participate in weekly skin cancer clinics
- Undertake a weekly dermatological surgical list
Key responsibilities will include:
- Take a leading role in the coordination and delivery of dermatology research studies, including commercial trials and studies within the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) portfolio.
- Contribute to study design, feasibility assessments, and protocol development alongside Principal Investigators.
- Prepare and submit research documentation, including ethics applications via the Health Research Authority (HRA), and local R&D approvals.
- Independently recruit, consent, and manage study participants in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
- Participate in dermatology outpatient clinics at registrar level, with appropriate supervision.
- Independently assess and manage patients presenting with a wide range of dermatological conditions.
- Support specialist clinics (e.g. skin cancer, inflammatory dermatoses, biologics services) where relevant to research activity.
- Lead clinical audit and quality improvement projects aligned with Trust and departmental priorities.
- Contribute to service development initiatives, particularly those integrating research into routine clinical care.
