The role of Electrical Shift Engineer is a rewarding and entrusted position within the Estates team at St James's University Hospital. The successful candidate will work as part of a shift team, working shifts four on, four off consisting of two days followed by two nights. Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is a large Trust with a huge portfolio of equipment and systems, allowing the successful candidate to gain experience in a wide range of areas and environments.
The successful candidate will work on complex systems, carry out dynamic risk assessments, work autonomously as required, organise and rectify reactive works, and carry out statutory planned maintenance items to ensure maximum availability of equipment to minimise any downtime. The ethos is to put patients first and work towards a collective goal. Team building and collaboration are at the core of what we do to ensure that collectively we give our best.

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out Statutory PPM works as directed by their respective Estates Officer, utilise Estates engineering systems such as K2, interrogate the BEMS, and support and liaise extensively with other CSUs, contractors, and outside agencies. The position covers a wide spectrum of responsibility supported by an on-call Estates Manager out of normal working hours. Often it is the first point of call for Estates related issues or emergencies such as fires and floods/equipment breakdowns. The successful candidate will need to have good communication skills and be able to work under pressure as part of a team coupled with a solid engineering knowledge base.
The role will focus on making safe first and foremost, then working on engineering solutions to enhance and support clinical colleagues in treating patients. The ability to work with other trades, problem solve, interpret work drawings, learn new techniques, undergo training, and carry out assessments are all key elements of the role. The role is about being organised, professional, and working to the HTMs and other guidance documentation while providing the necessary supporting documentation/feedback. The role can be challenging but rewarding and is one of the most important in terms of both patient and staff contact.
What you will bring to the role
- To communicate effectively with Wards and Departments in relation to Estates issues utilising written and/or verbal communication methods to ensure standards of service delivery are maintained and the service user is fully informed of works affecting their areas of responsibility.
- To ensure that job descriptions are amended/updated to comply with the requirements of ISO9001:2000, HTMs, working practices, and Permit to Work Systems.
- Interpret and work from all instructions, drawings, and specifications in electrical or mechanical installations, plant, and equipment, to deal with new situations as they arise and pass on knowledge to others.
- Provide written job descriptions for new PPM items utilising Manufacturers instructions and best practice guidance.
- Have a thorough knowledge across a range of work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge or relevant practical experience.
- Manufacture, design, assemble, erect, and install new work often using own judgement regarding a range of complex equipment, requiring accuracy and precision.
- Problem solving of technical issues and fault diagnosis on complex Mechanical and Electrical systems.
- Observe statutory and other relevant requirements in particular to Health & Safety and Codes of Practice applicable to Operational Services.
- Learn new techniques and undergo training as necessary.
- The postholder will be expected to help develop policies, procedures, and practices in relation to work area as appropriate.
- Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance and Day to Day duties involving the maintenance of all types of plant, equipment, and installations, including boilers, water testing, stripping down boilers for insurance inspections, and electrical system maintenance including fire alarm systems, batteries, and uninterruptible power supplies.
- Utilise the Works Management System for recording, updating, and auditing estates records and the compilation of Plant Histories.
- Carry out surveys for future maintenance, alterations, or improvements including the preparation and compilation of technical reports.
- Carry out maintenance and repair to building sanitary and water distribution systems in line with HSE guidance.
