To provide physical activity advice, individual exercise assessment and prescription to appropriate cardiovascular patients in the clinical setting.

To work with the cardiovascular rehabilitation team to develop and deliver lifestyle behaviour change.

To support and contribute to safe and effective service delivery, e.g., equipment checks, cleaning.

Within a multi-disciplinary team, assist in the co-ordination, delivery and development of a comprehensive cardiovascular rehabilitation programme, to include:

  • Prepare and be responsible for the completion of patient functional capacity tests to establish physical capabilities and develop tailored programmes of exercise suitable to the patient’s needs and limitations.
  • Assist in clinical assessments and risk stratification.
  • Have the ability to travel across and deliver cardiovascular rehabilitation across South Cumbria.
  • Assist with the delivery of educational talks, such as exercise, goal setting and nutrition.
  • Be responsible for the supervision and demonstration of exercise-based cardiovascular rehabilitation sessions.
  • Ensure adequate levels of supervision of all rehabilitation sessions in line with service policies and procedures and according to the patient’s care plan.
  • Ensure that all patients progress through the relevant stages of the programme at the correct pace.
  • Maintain all records associated with cardiovascular rehabilitation in an organised and confidential manner in accordance with the Code of Conduct and Caldicott principles.
  • Prepare the exercise areas and maintain clinical equipment, reporting any faults immediately.
  • Assist in the daily cleaning and regular deep cleaning of all exercise equipment as per department standards.
  • Assist with the supervision of students attending for work or clinical experience.
  • Enter data onto the National Audit of Cardiac Rehabilitation database.
  • Liaise with senior staff to discuss management of more complex patients.

We operate from three main hospitals: Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our Community Service for adults is provided in people's homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, and community hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Assume responsibility for monitoring the progress of all patients undergoing cardiovascular rehabilitation, evaluating their condition and adapting their programme as necessary within department standards and protocols, seeking senior assistance as required.

Other duties and responsibilities include:

  • To contribute to the smooth running of the department through the performance of other duties.
  • To effectively communicate with all members of the cardiovascular rehab team and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Liaise with relevant health and leisure professionals to ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Enter confidential patient data into paper-based patient records and using computer information systems ensuring all clinical audit data is recorded as required.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the post as determined by the Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Lead.
  • Contribute towards department policy development by providing comments on new proposals.
  • Maintain, update and restock health education materials and noticeboards.
