We respect the rights of children and aim to provide a safe and healthy environment for them within the department. We see children as children first, recognising their changing needs and abilities as they become older, rather than as a disease process or problem. We encourage parents and children to be actively involved in the care provided. We aim to work in partnership with the family and the general practitioner to provide as much care as possible at home. We respect the individual racial, linguistic, religious, and cultural background of each child. All members of the department aim to work in a multi-disciplinary way.

We aim to provide fast and effective communication with families and general practitioners via the telephone, patient information sheets, and very rapid discharge summaries. We aim to provide a high standard of care, facilitated by the use of protocols and guidelines, which are continuously reviewed in clinical and audit meetings. We aim for a situation where all members of staff are being trained, or are involved in training others, or both. We aim for a climate of constant innovation underpinned by research and audit.
