In-House Lawyer to join their Legal team on an interim basis, with potential longer-term opportunities.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Qualified Lawyer looking for a varied in-house position, providing practical and solutions-focused legal advice across a broad range of corporate matters.
While the role offers exposure to areas including Data Protection, Employment Law, Corporate Governance and Complaints, the immediate priority will be supporting the organisation across commercial contracts and procurement.
Sitting within a specialist Business Support Legal team, you will work alongside Senior Lawyers and a Paralegal to provide legal advice across the organisation.
The formal remit covers both contentious and non-contentious matters affecting the organisation as a public body and employer, including commercial contracts and procurement, risk, governance, data protection, equality and employment law.
A significant part of the role will involve the legal review of contracts, supporting procurement activity and providing practical advice throughout the contracting process.
You will work across a varied and relatively high volume of organisational contracts, which may include IT services, framework agreements, external legal services, research and other corporate procurement activity.
Alongside commercial work, you will provide broader in-house legal support across employment and tribunal matters, Information Governance and Data Protection, corporate complaints, governance, policy and organisational projects.
You'll identify legal risks early and work collaboratively with colleagues to develop pragmatic solutions rather than simply identifying barriers.
The wider role also includes monitoring legal developments, advising on internal policies and supporting legal awareness across the organisation.
The successful candidate will be a Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or CILEX Lawyer with strong legal analytical skills and experience in at least one of commercial contracts, Data Protection or Employment Law.
Experience of commercial contracts and procurement will be particularly valuable for this appointment.
Salary: £49,358 per annum, rising to £51,768 following successful probationary period
Key Responsibilities
- Review, draft and advise on a varied portfolio of commercial contracts and agreements.
- Provide legal advice and support across procurement activity, including framework agreements and external service arrangements.
- Identify contractual and legal risks and provide pragmatic, solutions-focused advice to colleagues.
- Provide broader in-house legal advice across Data Protection, Information Governance, Employment Law, equality, governance and corporate complaints.
- Support employment tribunal, civil claim and other case-related correspondence where required.
Advise on internal policies, procedures and organisational projects to ensure legal compliance.
- Undertake legal research and monitor relevant legislative and case law developments.
- Support policy development and provide legal input into cross-organisational projects and working groups.
- Develop effective relationships across the organisation, translating complex legal issues into clear and practical advice.
- Contribute to legal training and awareness across the organisation.
- Candidate Profile
- Appropriate qualification and experience as a Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEX.
- Strong experience advising on commercial contracts and/or procurement, including the legal review of contracts.
- Broader generalist in-house legal experience, ideally including exposure to Data Protection, Employment Law, Information Governance or Corporate Governance.
- Strong legal analytical skills and judgement, with the ability to assess complex issues and provide focused, legally sound advice.
- Excellent written communication and drafting skills, with the ability to explain complex legal matters clearly to non-legal audiences.
- Experience working within the public sector, regulation, local government or a similarly complex organisation would be highly desirable.
- Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to work collaboratively across different organisational functions.
- Ability to manage a varied workload, competing priorities and a relatively high volume of contractual matters.
- A pragmatic and solutions-focused approach to legal advice.
