JOB DESCRIPTION & PERSON SPECIFICATION ROLE: Hospice Physician (Specialty Doctor) (Limited Term Appointment - 12 months) REPORTS TO: Medical Director PAY BAND: Hospice Specialty Doctor - £52,608.12 to £97,111.05 (FTE based upon a 40 hour week).
This will be pro rata for a 10 hour per week contract.
LOCATION: Hospice HQ, Strang, Braddan, Isle of Man, IM4 4RP PURPOSE OF ROLE: The Hospice Physician will work within a small team providing day to day clinical care of Hospice patients ensuring excellent end of life patient care is delivered to all our patients.
They will work closely with and be accountable to the Medical Director and provide overnight on call provision when the Medical Director is off Island or not available.
This role may also include weekend working.
- KEY DUTIES
- The clinical care of patients in accordance with the approved Hospice policies.
- Undertaking prescribing duties, including providing advice and support to RNs as needed
- Acting as deputy for the Medical Director providing cover (with phone support if needed) to deal with urgent matters in their absence.
- Ensuring through practice, that the highest possible standard of medical care is provided to our patients.
- Liaising with hospital medical services in respect of admissions from and discharges to hospitals
- This will include attending the hospital and working with medical clinical colleagues as required to proactively identify dying patients and support patient transfers in a timely way
- Using and enhancing palliative care knowledge and experience and medical/surgical techniques to support complex symptom management of patients
- Liaising with the Nurse Consultant, Clinical Nurse Specialist Team, In Patient Nursing Staff and the Primary Health Care Team, and the General Practitioners, in respect of admissions from and discharge to the patients' homes.
- Undertaking patient related data collection and review using this information to understand, assess and seek to continually improve our patient experience.
- Daily discussion of each patient within Hospice with other medical and nursing staff, co-ordinating and adjusting treatment wherever appropriate.
- Meeting patients relatives and assisting with emotional support as required.
- Contact and discussion with the Medical Director, Nursing Staff and other members of the multidisciplinary care team relating to patients within the community.
- Visits to patients in the Community where medical assessment and possible admission to Hospice are considered necessary.
- Participation in teaching programmes for staff in all disciplines including regular in-service training and undertaking education of other professional groups as necessary.
- Teaching of medical students and doctors in training where appropriate.
- Any other duties as requested by the Medical Director.
