We are looking for a motivated and customer focused Business Rates Officer to join our Revenues and Benefits Service covering Boston Borough Council, South Holland District Council and East Lindsey District Council. This is an important role supporting businesses, taxpayers and colleagues by ensuring Business Rates accounts are administered accurately, efficiently and in line with legislation. You will be responsible for maintaining Business Rates records, processing changes in circumstance, awarding discounts and exemptions, dealing with billing and recovery enquiries and providing clear advice to customers by letter, e‑mail and phone.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain accurate Business Rates accounts and customer records.
- Process changes in liability, occupancy and property details.
- Assess and apply Business Rates reliefs, discounts and exemptions.
- Deal with customer enquiries by telephone, email, and correspondence.
- Issue bills, notices and correspondence in accordance with legislation and council procedures.
- Support recovery activity, including payment arrangements, reminders, and summonses.
- Liaise with internal and external agencies.
- Ensure all work is completed accurately and within agreed performance targets.
- Promote self-service and help customers access online Business Rates services.
- Handle sensitive or challenging enquiries professionally and empathetically.
About you
You will have experience in a Business Rates, revenues, local authority or customer service environment. You should be confident dealing with the public, able to interpret information accurately, and comfortable working with IT systems and legislation.
Essential requirements
- Experience of working in Business Rates, revenues administration or a similar customer focused role.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage a varied workload and meet deadlines.
- Confident using IT systems, databases and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to remain calm and professional when dealing with difficult or vulnerable customers.
- A commitment to delivering excellent public service.
- A good standard of Maths and English is required.
