Job Summary Provide a phlebotomy service to patients according to good clinical practice, following practice protocols and guidelines

  • Main Responsibilities
  • Take blood samples from patients when requested to do so or when indicated by an alert or template.
  • Enter details on ICE and in templates where indicated.
  • Measure blood pressures and record on templates.
  • Test urine specimens using appropriate equipment and record as requested.
  • Ensure all pathological samples are safely presented and correctly labelled for collection.
  • Encourage and educate patients as to healthy lifestyles, if trained to do so Maintain treatment and clinic rooms in a clean and tidy condition.
  • All items in GP consulting rooms must have a minimum of 3 months shelf life
  • Complete monitoring logs within the timescales indicated.
  • Communication & Organisation
  • Provide support to and communicate regularly with other Practice colleagues to ensure continuity of care and administration; seeking help from colleagues as appropriate.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising peoples needs for alternative methods of communication and responding accordingly.
  • Attend Practice Nurse clinical meetings and contribute where appropriate
  • Enter all clinical information onto computer.
  • Observe and act upon diary dates on the computer.
  • Ensure competence in making computer entries, seeking help from the Management staff or Doctors, if required.
  • Liaise with patients doctor regarding treatment and advice being given
  • Organise and prioritise workload on a day-to-day basis and work within the time-frame allocated for specific tasks.
  • Training & Development
  • Keep up to date with good nursing practice.
  • Maintain your personal development plan and present it at your annual appraisal.
  • Undertake specific training when requested to do so by the Practice.
  • Participate in audit where appropriate.
  • Be aware of your clinical competencies.
  • Do not attempt to undertake any procedure or give any medical advice that you are not competent to perform.
  • Inform the Manager if you do not feel competent to perform any of the duties asked of you, in order for additional training to be organised.
  • Contribute to the effectiveness of the team by reflecting on own and team activities and making suggestions on ways to improve and enhance the teams performance.
  • Health & Safety
  • Be familiar with all Practice Policies and Procedures and how to access them.
  • Follow Practice Health and Safety procedures.
  • Replace sharps boxes when two-thirds full and ensure they are kept safe awaiting collection.
  • Dispose of clinical waste in the containers provided
  • Follow Practice infection control procedures.
  • Report any potential risks identified.
  • Other
  • Perform any other nursing duties that the Practice may request, subject only to you being competent to perform said duty.
  • Act as a chaperone when requested; assisting doctors and nurses.
  • You will also undertake to perform any other duties of a general, clerical or administrative nature required of you to facilitate the smooth running of the Practice, as requested by the Manager or Doctors
  • Changes in the work required from you may result from, for example; changes in legislation, changes in the way the NHS operates, changes in computer and other technology or changes in the way Medical Practice is run.
