The Head of Finance provides strategic financial management support to their assigned Care Groups. This includes leading on the financial aspects of all elements of care group business including planning, reporting and business development.
The Head of Finance is responsible for the efficient functioning, integrity, business focus and performance of the Care Group Financial Management Team (Finance Managers, Deputy Finance Managers and Assistant Finance Managers). The post holder is responsible for ensuring that the Care Group Financial Management Team is appropriately configured, and individuals within it possess the qualifications, skills, and training to enable them to meet customer expectations and required outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide expert financial leadership and advice to the Care Group, senior managers, clinicians and directors to support strategic and operational decision making.
- Lead annual financial planning, ensuring alignment with Trust objectives and financial targets.
- Monitor financial performance, identify risks and opportunities, prepare forecasts and support recovery plans where required.
- Maintain effective financial systems, controls and governance processes.
- Lead the preparation and appraisal of business cases using NHS England’s Five Case Model to support investment decisions.
- Manage Care Group budgets, authorise expenditure within delegated limits and ensure compliance with financial policies.
- Prepare financial reports, providing clear analysis and recommendations to support decision making.
- Lead and develop the Financial Management Team, promoting high performance and continuous improvement.
- Support Quality Improvement initiatives and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, productivity and value for money.
- Promote the use of Service Line Reporting and review Service Level Agreements to support service performance and development.
- Build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including Directors, Integrated Care Boards, NHS England and partner organisations.
- Provide financial guidance to budget holders and managers, and support projects, service reviews, investigations and senior level meetings as required.
