A full-time (10 PA) Consultant Haematologist post is available at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital (SMH), Aylesbury and Wycombe Hospital (WH). This is a substantive post and has been created from PAs that will become available within the department.
The successful applicant will join the 7 other substantive consultants in this busy department covering outpatient work at both WH and SMH and the combined inpatient ward at SMH. The appointee will join the haematology consultant out of hours rota (frequency 1 in 8). This includes working 1 in 8 weeks covering the ward/inpatients and weekend providing a daily weekend consultant ward round for approximately 10 to 14 haematology inpatients at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, as well as on-call cover.
Any applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
Qualifications:
- FRCPath or equivalent and MRCP or equivalent are essential qualifications for this post.
- Candidates are expected to be broadly trained in haematology and must hold full and specialist registration (haematology), with a licence to practise, with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
- Applicants that are UK trained must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by the date of interview.
- Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
Existing consultants are experienced in general and malignant haematology and currently have areas of special interest covering haemostasis and coagulation, transfusion, haemoglobinopathies and paediatric haematology and share general laboratory duties. The appointee will be invited to negotiate an area of special interest within the team as well as being experienced in general and malignant haematology.

Responsibilities:
- Responsibility, in conjunction with consultant colleagues, for the provision of a clinical and laboratory haematology and blood transfusion service for the population of Buckinghamshire. Clinical provision encompasses inpatient, day-case and outpatient services for both malignant and non-malignant haematological disease.
- Shared managerial responsibility on an agreed basis with colleagues.
- Provision of an out of hours ‘on call’ service with consultant colleagues.
- Participation in undergraduate/postgraduate medical/nursing/laboratory staff teaching as appropriate.
- The post-holder will engage with the requirements of NCAG with regards to the local acute oncology service.
- Provision of mutual cover with consultant colleagues for periods of annual leave, sickness and study leave on an equitable basis.
- Participation in Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance procedures.
- It is expected that the postholder will be registered for CPD with the relevant Royal College. The postholder will be required to produce evidence of engagement with CPD as part of the appraisal and revalidation process.
- Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust will provide doctors with support to complete a regular annual appraisal and with the revalidation process and the appointee will fully engage with this.
- Any concerns about a medical practitioner’s fitness to practise raised by patients or staff of the designated body or arising from another source are dealt with under the Maintaining High Professional Standards Policy found on the Trust intranet.
