The Health Care Assistant will function as part of the multi-disciplinary team within the ward or department to provide a seamless service and high-quality care to patients under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.

The HCA is expected to undertake care to meet the needs of the patients under the supervision of a qualified nurse, working within the Trust’s policies and procedures and the philosophy of the ward. Working collaboratively as part of the ward team.

It is expected that the Health Care Assistant will continue to develop their own capabilities and knowledge of nursing tasks in line with the Trust’s career pathway.

  • At all times maintain the dignity and respect of patients.
  • Maintain excellent communication with patients, relatives, and members of the MDT regarding all aspects of care demonstrating a variety of communications skills in accordance with the client group.
  • Implement patient care plans as instructed by a Registered Nurse.
  • Assist in the admission process by accurately recording patient’s demographic details.
  • Assist patients with personal and oral hygiene as instructed.
  • Assist patients with eating and drinking.
  • Monitor and accurately record dietary and fluid intake appropriately reporting any abnormalities to the nurse in charge.
  • Enable patients to access appropriate toilet facilities, collecting and disposing of body waste.
  • Test blood sugars, urine and stool specimens and accurately record results.
  • Obtain specimens and process specimens to the laboratory.
  • Able to prepare equipment for aseptic procedures as instructed.
  • Complete competencies and assist in Procedure clinics.
  • Under the supervision of a qualified nurse, support patients undergoing clinical procedures ensuring their dignity, respect, comfort, and safety.
  • Undertake equipment safety checks.
