To have the knowledge and ability to deliver basic individual nursing care, advice and education to patients, underpinned by external training (e.g. NVQ level 3) and relevant practical experience that is relevant to work area.

  • With appropriate service-specific training, carry out delegated clinical procedures; for example, simple wound care and closure, application of plaster of Paris and soft casts, application of splints and bandages, equipping and fitting patients with mobility aids such as crutches and frames.
  • To seek supervision and advice from on-site qualified staff as required and agreed.
  • To ensure that all patients are greeted and dealt-with in a friendly, sympathetic and supportive manner.
  • Alert staff to the arrival of patients who may need immediate assessment.
  • Maintain a watching-brief over patients who are waiting to be seen and alert staff to potential security / clinical problems (within own scope of knowledge & common sense).
  • To ensure that patient dignity and confidentiality are maintained during all verbal, IT and written communications.
  • Undertake and accurately record patient bio-metric observations, for example, blood pressure, blood glucose, temperature, heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, urinalysis, weight, visual acuity, ECG.
  • With appropriate training (and with supervision/advice available on-site), independently review and re-dress simple wounds, remove sutures and other wound closures.
  • With appropriate training (and with supervision/advice available on-site), independently review problems associated with plaster of Paris casts/slabs and soft casts and provide appropriate re-casting and repairs.
  • To take responsibility for the cleanliness and preparedness of all clinical equipment on each shift worked.
  • To ensure that clinical and related equipment / areas are always clinically clean and cleaning schedules are maintained as per CPFT and local protocols.
  • To be responsible for ensuring that equipment, consumables and stock levels are maintained as per local and decanted stock lists (rooms, cupboards, trolleys etc.) and that all stored items are available and fit for immediate use on all shifts worked.
  • To accompany, chaperone and support patients between departments and whilst in the Minor Injuries Unit, ensuring their safety, privacy and dignity are always maintained.
  • To be aware of and comply with emergency procedures; provide direct care in the event of a clinical emergency and contribute to the unit response to any fire or security incident / threat according to CPFT/ local procedures.
  • Provide a relief Receptionist role to cover planned breaks and planned/unplanned absence at any of the Minor Injuries Units.
  • In this role, accurately register patients using both paper and IT-based systems.
  • Book appointments in other hospitals/clinics at the request of the practitioners and ensure x-rays and patient notes are appropriately transferred and unit records are updated.
  • When necessary, maintain appropriate and accurate filing systems, both paper and IT-based for all patients attending the MIU ensuring that communications received subsequently (e.g. X-ray reports and letters) are matched with the original patient records.
  • Liaise where appropriate with all disciplines of staff participating with the provision of services covered by the MIU, including hospital and community-based staff, GP practice-based teams, Social Services and Child Protection team.
  • Provide administrative support to the MIU team, including: Reporting equipment faults, minor building repairs/need for maintenance, ordering stock of medical stores and stationery and ensuring adequate levels of patient information leaflets.
