Electrical Engineer (HV/LV Authorised Person)

The Electrical Engineer (HV/LV Authorised Person) will take ownership of the site’s electrical infrastructure, ensuring the safe, reliable and resilient operation of the power systems supporting the MSAI Scotland data centre.

The role will oversee HV and LV distribution from the grid intake through to the data hall and rack-level power, including switching, maintenance, fault response and planned works.

The role will also work closely with SSEN, electrical contractors and internal operations teams to maintain high levels of availability, resilience and compliance across the facility.

Duties

  • Act as the site HV/LV Authorised Person (AP), taking responsibility for the safe operation and control of HV and LV electrical systems.
  • Lead and carry out HV/LV switching, isolation, energisation and restoration in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Maintain and oversee the safe operation of HV switchgear, transformers, LV switchboards, UPS systems, busbars, PDUs and associated electrical infrastructure.
  • Ensure reliable A/B power distribution to critical loads and maintain N+1 resilience across the electrical infrastructure.
  • Monitor electrical systems and respond promptly to alarms, faults, outages and electrical incidents.
  • Coordinate planned and reactive preventative maintenance (PPM) and corrective works across the electrical estate.
  • Manage Permit to Work, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), electrical isolation and safe systems of work.
  • Review and approve electrical switching schedules, method statements, risk assessments and permits.
  • Work closely with the Critical Facilities and Data Centre Operations teams to coordinate maintenance and electrical change activities without compromising availability.
  • Liaise with SSEN regarding grid supply, outages, planned works, faults and electrical infrastructure requirements.
  • Manage and coordinate the site’s electrical contractors, including Emtec, ensuring works are completed safely, correctly and to the required standards.
  • Support commissioning, testing and energisation of new electrical infrastructure and data centre capacity.
  • Ensure all electrical systems are maintained in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, statutory requirements and site procedures.
  • Maintain accurate electrical documentation, including single-line diagrams, switching schedules, asset registers, maintenance records and operating procedures.
  • Participate in incident investigation, root-cause analysis and corrective action planning following electrical failures or near misses.
  • Support emergency response and participate in an on-call rota for critical electrical incidents.
  • Identify opportunities to improve electrical resilience, efficiency, reliability and operational performance.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant electrical safety legislation, industry standards and data centre operational requirements.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to engineering and operations staff on HV/LV systems and electrical safety.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of site electrical procedures, emergency operating procedures and maintenance strategies.
