Personal Assistant to a dynamic man with cerebral palsy in his mid-50s
You will need to do the following
- Be happy to give Anthony a hand to do things in his own home while communicating with his wife appropriately who also supports him as well as his mother-in-law who lives with them.
- Anthony requires help with all aspects of personal care and dressing.
- Give Anthony his medication when he asks for it as he knows what medication he takes and when he needs it.
- Carry out Anthony’s preferred means of transfer using a standing transfer so he can continue using his legs as much as possible.
There are also ceiling hoists one of which he uses mainly to be hoisted in and out of the bath.
- Learn how to communicate effectively with Anthony using his various means of communication especially a 100 symbol chart which he uses most of the time as well as a 600-word board which he accesses with a light on his head.
He uses an electronic voice-output device called an Accent 1400.
Anthony uses non-verbal communication which will become clearer as you get to know him.
- When necessary, prepare meals and give Anthony a hand with eating and drinking.
- Helping Anthony with various houseworking tasks as well as helping him to carry out his various pastimes.
- Being able to drive Anthony around would be an advantage.
