An opportunity has arisen for a six month secondment to the role of Divisional Nurse Director with the Medicine Division at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton. Working within a triumvirate, you will be responsible for the management of all non-medical clinical posts and the safety, quality, experience and effectiveness of all clinical services across a large multi-site division.

You will need to set, monitor, implement and maintain the highest standards of practice and patient care through a range of continuous quality improvement activities to further transform our pathways of care for patients, using improvement methodology, creating a climate where excellence in practice flourishes and where individuals are respected, valued, nurtured, developed and empowered for their role and contribution.

You will be experienced and competent at managing services across multiple sites, leading highly specialised people and empowering teams to deliver excellent patient outcomes, while continuing to develop a culture of respect and compassion in a supportive environment. You will understand and role model how to drive performance, professional standards and improve clinical services. We are looking for a clinical leader who is emotionally intelligent who can get things done through inspiring, empowering, and influencing teams. Significant recent experience of an acute environment with proven management and leadership skills is essential.

You will be expected to hold a portfolio of trust-wide projects, aligned to your professional registration and deputise as requested for the Chief Nurse and Directors of Nursing.

  • Clinical Leadership: Provide strong, visible leadership to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care. Oversee management of all non-medical clinical posts and ensure effective governance and safety across clinical services.
  • Strategic Direction: Shape the medicine division's strategic vision collaborating with Divisional Medical Director and Divisional Director ensuring alignment with organisational priorities and clinical needs.
  • Staffing & Workforce Planning: Lead recruitment, retention and skill mix reviews, ensuring safe staffing levels and fostering a supportive environment for professional development and continuous improvement. Manage the divisional budget alongside the divisional leadership team.
  • Patient Experience, Insight & Engagement: Ensure patient voices inform improvement efforts and that services are safe, effective, and consistently high in quality.
  • Continuous Improvement: Develop a culture of ongoing improvement, utilising data and technology to address health inequities, improve outcomes, and incorporate innovative practices.
  • Collaboration & system working: Work with other divisions, executive teams, trust wide services and external partners.

Working closely with the Executive Chief Nurse, Directors of Nursing for Operations and Professional Standards, Divisional Medical Director and the Divisional Director the post holder is accountable for providing a high level of professional, operational and transformational leadership across the Division and wider Trust. The post holder will have operational accountability for the Divisions nursing workforce.

As a highly experienced and credible senior nurse, the post holder will be responsible for driving excellent professional standards and leading improvements to deliver true “Compassion and Dignity” in care. They will provide professional nursing expertise and advice on operational and strategic management issues regarding quality and governance for the Business units, Division and across the Trust.
