We are excited to advertise two new Trainee Cognitive Behaviour Therapist posts in our Older Adult CMHTs. We are looking for individuals experienced in mental health services (e.g. RMNs, OTs and Social Workers) to join us for a two-year training scheme. The trainee posts will be split across our borough CMHTs: Croydon; Lewisham; Lambeth and Southwark.

This is an exciting opportunity to support the transformation of older adult community mental health services and your training will be fully funded by the NHS. This role will contribute to ensuring older adults with severe mental health problems have greater access to psychologically informed interventions.

As a Trainee CBT Therapist, you will be expected to work under supervision as part of an Older Adults community mental health team (CMHT) delivering psychologically informed interventions and supporting adults to receive the right care. You will need to have flexibility and adaptability and a passion for working with adults with severe mental health problems.

You will also be released one day per week to complete a two-year Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy at UCL: the first year would be in CBT for Anxiety and Depression and the second year specialises in CBT for Psychosis.

This is a training post which will have three elements:

  • One day per week to attend training at UCL;
  • Approximately two days per week to complete CBT work for the course;
  • The remaining time used to support your team in various ways.

It is expected that the role is focused on supporting and promoting psychological approaches in the day to day clinical work of the team so this may include group work, psychoeducation, delivering psychologically informed interventions and undertaking assessments. There will be supervision from the CMHT Psychology & Psychotherapy service to support specialist psychological practice.

The Older Adult service is a dedicated service to meet the mental health needs of people aged over 65, which is highly valued by service users and their support networks. This means we work with a range of presentations from depression, anxiety to trauma and psychosis and sometimes these difficulties present in the context of dementia: our work is fascinating and important as we work with a vulnerable and interesting client group.

We are a multi-disciplinary service: our CMHTs work to provide ongoing support to people living at home whilst our HTTs provide short term input to support people in crisis. Each borough CMHT is based as follows: This role in providing a quality service to people seen by the Older Adults Community Mental Health Teams. Older Adults present with a wide range of mental health problems and benefit from psychosocial approaches that this post will be supported to deliver.

The posts will also support general clinical functions of the team such as supporting assessments and monitoring mental health and working with colleagues to identify and address any concerns.

Please note: The Trainee CBT Therapist posts are training positions and trainees are not guaranteed a substantive post upon completion of training. Successful candidates will be expected to travel to university in order to complete their one day training and we anticipate that the training will take place at UCL but the position will be based in South London (Croydon, Lewisham, Southwark).

We are committed to developing a team that is fully representative of the communities that we serve, and especially welcome applications from individuals with protected characteristics that are currently under-represented in our workforce.

Please note that NHSE rules that recipients of NHSE funded training cannot start further NHSE funded training within 2 years of a previous NHSE funded training.

This advert closes on Tuesday 25 Aug 2026.
