The post holders will work at Tier 2 (Registrar/Middle Grade) level within the Neonatal Department, participating in the resident Tier 2 on-call rota and contributing to the delivery of a comprehensive Neonatal Intensive Care Service.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of consultant neonatologists, specialty trainees, Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs), neonatal nurses and allied health professionals, providing high-quality care to newborn infants across the intensive care, high dependency, special care, transitional care and post-natal ward settings.

The post is particularly suitable for candidates wishing to develop advanced neonatal intensive care skills and those considering a career in Neonatology, Grid Training, CESR or consultant practice. The post is initially offered for 6 months, with the possibility of extension subject to service requirements and satisfactory performance. Applications are welcomed from both UK and international medical graduates. A full GMC registration with a licence to practise is essential along with experience of working in the UK in a level 2/3 unit for at least 6 months.

The successful candidates will be expected to commence employment at the earliest. The Neonatal Unit provides a full range of intensive care services for approximately 5,500–5,800 births annually and comprises 8 Intensive Care cots, 8 High Dependency cots and 20 Special Care/Transitional Care cots.

The successful candidate will provide registrar-level clinical leadership across the neonatal service, including NICU, HDU, SCBU, Transitional Care and postnatal wards. The post holder will deliver high-quality, family-centred care within a multidisciplinary team.

The role requires competence in advanced neonatal procedures, including:

  • neonatal resuscitation
  • endotracheal intubation
  • surfactant administration
  • umbilical venous and arterial catheterisation
  • arterial line placement
  • therapeutic hypothermia
  • conventional and high-frequency ventilation
  • inhaled nitric oxide therapy
  • non-invasive respiratory support

A full shift rota operates in compliance with Working Time Regulations. The successful candidate will provide Tier 2 cover, attend high-risk deliveries and support emergency admissions and out-of-hours care.

The neonatal team includes 7 ST1-3 resident doctors on the Tier 1 rota, 5 ST4-8 resident doctors working in neonatology, 2 community ST4-8 resident doctors contributing to the middle-grade rota, and an established ANNP team supporting both rotas.

The post holder will supervise and support junior medical staff and ANNP colleagues, contribute to consultant-led ward rounds, participate in clinical handovers and uphold high standards of clinical care, professionalism and patient safety. Participation in teaching, audit, quality improvement and clinical governance activities is expected to support ongoing service development.
