Colorectal Clinical Educator | University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust

The post holder will play a central role in the organisation, development and delivery of high-quality undergraduate medical student education within the Colorectal service at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB). Working in partnership with the Specialty Teaching Lead for Undergraduate Medical Education and the Undergraduate Medical Education Department, the post holder will support the delivery of a comprehensive and engaging clinical placement experience for University of Nottingham medical students. This includes facilitating structured teaching sessions, supporting clinical learning in practice, and contributing to the assessment and examination processes.

The role will combine clinical expertise in colorectal nursing with education delivery, ensuring that teaching is patient-centred, clinically effective, and aligned with Trust policies, professional standards, and national guidance. The post holder will support students to develop the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required to deliver safe and compassionate patient care. The post holder will also contribute to the ongoing development, quality improvement and evaluation of the undergraduate teaching programme, ensuring effective use of resources and a positive learning environment for students.

The post holder will support the delivery of a high-quality undergraduate teaching programme within the colorectal service, ensuring students receive a structured, supportive and clinically relevant learning experience. Working closely with the multidisciplinary team and medical education colleagues, they will facilitate learning in both classroom and clinical environments, contributing to student development and programme improvement.

• Deliver and support a range of teaching activities including induction, tutorials, clinical skills sessions and ward-based teaching.
• Facilitate student learning in clinical environments and ensure achievement of placement objectives.
• Coordinate with clinical teams to provide access to learning opportunities (clinics, theatres, ward rounds).
• Support student assessment, examinations and provide constructive feedback.
• Act as a key point of contact for students, offering guidance and signposting to support services where required.
• Contribute to the development, evaluation and improvement of the teaching programme.
• Maintain high standards of specialist colorectal clinical practice and model best practice.
• Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary and medical education teams to support delivery of high-quality teaching.
• Escalate any concerns related to student conduct or wellbeing in line with Trust and University processes.
• Participate in relevant education meetings and contribute to programme development.

The Clinical Educator will support the organisation and delivery of high-quality teaching for undergraduate medical students during clinical placements at UHDB. The post holder will facilitate learning to ensure students achieve key competencies, developing the knowledge, clinical skills and professional behaviours required for effective patient care. Working closely with the Undergraduate Medical Education team and clinical colleagues, the role includes planning and delivering a range of educational activities such as student induction, bedside teaching, clinical workshops and small group sessions. The post holder will help coordinate learning opportunities across clinical settings, including clinics, theatres and ward environments. The Clinical Educator will provide ongoing supervision, support and feedback to students, contributing to their assessment and ensuring appropriate escalation where pastoral or conduct concerns arise. They will also support the delivery of student examinations and teaching programmes. The role contributes to the continuous improvement of education provision, including reviewing teaching effectiveness and supporting service development to enhance the student experience.

Working as part of the multidisciplinary team, the post holder will maintain strong communication with clinical and education leads, support patient involvement in teaching, and uphold high standards of professional practice, ensuring care is delivered in line with Trust policies and values.
