Technical Officer Mechanical at
Merville Barracks, Colchester, CO2 7UT , you'll play a key role in ensuring our mechanical assets remain compliant, safe and operating efficiently across a busy Ministry of Defence site.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced mechanical engineering professional who enjoys combining technical expertise with operational leadership.
Working alongside senior engineers and site managers, you'll act as the subject matter expert for mechanical services, helping to deliver planned and reactive maintenance while ensuring compliance with statutory regulations and Ministry of Defence standards.
Whatyou’ll do
- Act as the site Subject Matter Expert (SME) for mechanical engineering services.
- Support the delivery of planned and reactive mechanical maintenance across Merville Barracks.
- Undertake responsibilities as Gas Safety Manager, Authorised Person (Petroleum), Mechanical AP and F-Gas (or work towards appointment).
- Manage statutory inspections, insurance inspections and ensure remedial works are completed within required timescales.
- Ensure mechanical assets remain compliant with all statutory and contractual requirements.
- Support the management of the site's gas network, mechanical systems and associated infrastructure.
- Maintain accurate asset registers, maintenance schedules and statutory records using the CAFM system (QFM).
- Provide technical advice and support to engineering teams, projects and other departments.
- Assist with project design reviews, lifecycle planning and the successful handover of new assets.
- Manage subcontractors, monitor performance and carry out quality audits on completed works.
- Complete and oversee Permit to Work documentation, service clearances and hot work permits.
- Ensure all activities are delivered in line with Health & Safety legislation, JSP Safe Systems of Work and Sodexo procedures.
- Build strong working relationships with the Ministry of Defence, Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), contractors and internal stakeholders.
- Support continuous improvement, operational performance and budget objectives across the engineering function.
- Participate in the site's on-call duty manager rota and provide technical support during planned and emergency situations.
What you bring
- Experience working within planned and reactive maintenance in commercial, industrial or Ministry of Defence environments.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical building services and engineering compliance.
- Experience working with statutory inspections, planned maintenance and asset compliance.
- Working towards, or able to obtain, Authorised Person status in Mechanical, Gas, F-Gas and Petroleum disciplines.
- Excellent understanding of health, safety and quality management.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound technical decisions.
- Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience using CAFM systems and Microsoft Office.
- A proactive, organised approach with excellent attention to detail.
Qualifications
- HNC or Level 4/5 qualification in Mechanical Building Services or a related discipline.
- Ability to achieve Authorised Person status.
- Level 6 qualification, Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status or equivalent experience.
- Existing AP or Responsible Person qualifications in Mechanical, Gas, F-Gas, Petroleum or Pressure Systems.
- QA Auditor training.
- Experience within a Ministry of Defence environment and knowledge of JSP 375 Safe Systems of Work.
- Experience working within a PFI contract environment.
