Clinical Teaching Fellow - Paediatric | Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The post holder will support the Trust in its delivery and development of high quality teaching in Paediatrics. This will be mainly to undergraduate medical students of Imperial College, London, which is a corporate strategic aim and Medical School requirement. This post has a developmental role and will be organizational, aspirational, involve curriculum planning, as well as direct delivery of teaching.

It is expected that the post holder will combine clinical practice, teaching and research in medical education to develop their portfolio of skills. The post holder would be expected to register or already be registered to complete a Master of Arts in Clinical Education or equivalent education degree. This post will support the holder to develop an impressive post-graduate educational portfolio and degree qualification. The opportunity to achieve a higher postgraduate degree is also possible by extending the initial one-year contract.

A key aspect is to engage the Consultant Teachers in the delivery of the undergraduate learning outcomes for Paediatrics and taking forward a key aim of developing and refining educational tools for sustaining regular high quality multidisciplinary teaching within the Department. We encourage educational research projects, supervised by the DCS and UGLOG (with partners), and on-going collection of quality feedback data. The post holder will be expected to publish peer reviewed articles and present Trust data at a national or international meeting.

The post holder’s working week will be agreed by the post holder, the UGLOG, the GM, the DCS and the Centre for Clinical Practice manager. The post holder will have varying responsibilities for organization of and supervision of all Undergraduate teaching and assessment within Paediatrics. In particular, the delivery of 1:1 teaching of individual students within the clinical environment with the completion on mini PACES, the facilitation of the induction course and student appraisal as well as facilitate and deliver small and large group teaching.

Postgraduate teaching:

• Promote, support, and engage SpR’s as undergraduate teachers and mentors
• Support consultant teaching and their development as undergraduate teachers
• Participate in the development of simulation and debriefing skills in simulation, supported by a simulation instructor in relation to undergraduate training
• Teach alongside others, supervise & assess F1’s & F2’s as undergraduate teachers
• In conjunction with the Clinical Skills team, develop programmes of learning for clinical aspects of medical education, enhancing training from classroom or skills laboratory to ward/clinical area.
• Participate in postgraduate teaching of foundation year doctors and core medical trainees on Child Health topics in liaison with the postgraduate medical department and corresponding fellows.

Undergraduate teaching:

• Assist in the mapping of clinical elements of the learning outcomes in Child Health
• Develop teaching, including materials and resources with others, to support the undergraduate curriculum within the department. Design/develop programs for use on the mini-i-Pad. Develop a video library for Paediatric procedures
• Teach, supervise and assess undergraduate medical students in the practice setting, participating in formative and summative assessments as required
• Develop teaching sessions for undergraduate medical students in the practice setting. This includes currently running programmes, e.g. clinics
• Contribute to the teaching of undergraduate clinical skills, in conjunction with the Clinical Skills team.
• Develop revision sessions for PACES examinations (mock PACES)
• Assist with the writing, preparation of exam questions and facilitation of the undergraduate exams- i.e. SBA/VSA written, PACES

Research & Audit:

• Participate in regular Departmental, Academic and Audit meetings
• Undertake audit in clinical practice and medical education
• Undertake research projects within undergraduate medical education with a focus on Paediatrics under the supervision of the site lead and head of year 5 in Paediatrics at Imperial College.
• Responsible for designing questionnaires to obtain qualitative data, collect and analyze this.
• Attend and present research findings and papers at internal academic meetings and external professional conferences.
• Contribute to publications arising from this project.

Personal and professional development:

• Attend Trust corporate and medical induction programmes
• Register for the Master of Arts in Clinical Education or equivalent education course
• Participate in a regular 4 weekly meetings and 6-monthly appraisal with their educational supervisor
• Honorary Teaching status with Imperial College, London

Expected outcomes of the role:

• Demonstration of the activity performed in promoting Undergraduate Learning and Teaching at the Trust, as assessed at the yearly Imperial College Governance Educational Medicine Visit (GEMV)
• Completion of a Master of Arts in Clinical/Medical Education (or equivalent education degree) if not done already, OR an MD/PhD in medical education under the supervision of the Site Lead and Head of year 5
