This 6 month General Medicine IMT3+ role at Southmead Hospital offers exceptional clinical exposure across General Internal Medicine. The post is a full-time fixed-term appointment for an initial period of six months, with the possibility of extension to 12 months, based at Southmead Hospital. It offers an excellent opportunity for doctors wishing to consolidate their experience at IMT3+/registrar level within a supportive and busy teaching hospital environment.

Based within the Gastroenterology Department, the successful candidate will gain broad experience in the assessment and management of patients with gastrointestinal and liver disease across inpatient wards, specialty referrals and outpatient clinics, whilst also participating in the acute medical registrar on-call rota and developing their skills in General Internal Medicine.

Learning Objectives/Specialist Interests:

  • Develop confidence and competence working at registrar level in General Internal Medicine.
  • Gain experience leading the assessment and management of acutely unwell medical patients through participation in the acute medical registrar on-call rota.
  • Develop knowledge and skills in the investigation and management of gastrointestinal and liver disease.
  • Participate in outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary working, audit, quality improvement and teaching, while being supported to develop individual educational or specialist interests.

Clinical Experience:

This 6-month post offers registrar-level experience in General Internal Medicine, based within the Gastroenterology Department. It is ideally suited to doctors holding full MRCP(UK) (or equivalent) who are seeking to consolidate their experience before higher specialty training or further develop their skills in General Medicine and Gastroenterology. Although a non-training post, the successful candidate will receive close consultant supervision and gain broad clinical experience across inpatient gastroenterology, specialty referrals, outpatient clinics and the acute medical take.

Previous experience in Gastroenterology is not essential, making the post suitable for doctors wishing to develop expertise in the specialty while continuing to build confidence as a medical registrar. There will be opportunities to gain experience across a broad range of gastroenterology and hepatology services, including inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology, gastrointestinal bleeding, nutrition and multidisciplinary care. Candidates will also be encouraged to participate in audit, quality improvement and research.

Post holders will participate fully in the acute medical registrar on-call rota, including AMU, nights, twilight shifts and weekends.

Teaching:

Formal teaching responsibilities are not a requirement of the post. However, the successful candidate will work closely with Foundation Doctors, IMTs and medical students and will be expected to contribute to their day-to-day supervision and informal bedside teaching. Those with an interest in medical education will be supported to develop teaching activities where service commitments allow. Each post holder will be allocated an Educational Supervisor to provide support, appraisal and career development throughout the post.
