Liverpool University Hospitals of Liverpool Group is one of the largest provider groups in the NHS, bringing together three statutory organisations that collectively serve Liverpool and the surrounding region. With more than 19,000 colleagues and an annual income of around £1.8 billion, the Group provides a broad range of services, from community-based care through to highly specialised and nationally recognised clinical provision. It also plays an important role in research, education and innovation through its longstanding relationships with universities and partners across the city region.

The Group has reached an important stage in its development and, whilst much has been achieved, the Board recognises that there remains a great deal still to do. The successful candidate will need to bring people together behind a clear sense of direction, ensure that the benefits of working as a Group are realised in practice and maintain a clear focus on the quality of care provided to patients.

You will provide leadership across the Group and work closely with the Chair, Boards, executive teams, staff and partners to deliver the next stage of its development. You will lead the Group through an increasingly challenging operating environment, ensuring that quality of care, operational performance and financial stewardship remain at the heart of decision making. You will represent the Group within the wider health and care system, building effective relationships with NHS partners, local authorities, universities and other stakeholders across the region.

You will lead the advancement of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion across the Group, embedding inclusive leadership and tackling inequity in outcomes and experience. Liverpool has an outstanding reputation for research, education and innovation and you will work with our university partners and clinical leaders to ensure those strengths continue to grow and translate into better care, improved outcomes and greater opportunities for patients and staff.

NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHL Group) was formed on 1 November 2024, born from a shared aim to improve the care we provide our communities. We are one of the largest employers in the region, with over 18,900 colleagues who are dedicated to caring for our communities - from birth and beyond. For the 630,000 people across Merseyside, we are their local NHS. We provide general and emergency hospital care, alongside highly specialised regional services that extend to more than two million people in the North West.

We operate from five hospital sites:

  • Aintree University Hospital is the single receiving site for adult major trauma patients in Cheshire and Merseyside, and hosts a number of regional services including an award-winning stroke facility.
  • Broadgreen Hospital is home to several elective surgical, diagnostic and treatment services, together with specialist patient rehabilitation.
  • Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital provides specialist services in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology and respiratory medicine, both in the hospital and out in the community.
  • Liverpool Women's Hospital specialises in the health of women and babies, delivering over 7,200 babies in the UK's largest single site maternity hospital each year.
  • The Royal Liverpool University Hospital is the largest hospital in the country to provide inpatients with 100% single en-suite bedrooms and mainly focuses on complex planned care and specialist services.

You will be an accomplished executive leader with experience of operating successfully within large, complex organisations where performance, culture, stakeholder relationships and public accountability all matter. You may already be serving as a Chief Executive within the NHS. Equally, we are interested in exceptional leaders who can demonstrate the experience, judgement and leadership required to succeed at this level. You will see this role as much more than leading a large NHS organisation. You will recognise the opportunity to shape one of the country's most significant provider groups and to make a meaningful contribution to the future of healthcare across Liverpool and the wider region.

You will bring:

  • Significant executive leadership experience within a large and complex organisation
  • A track record of improving organisational performance and leading large scale change
  • Experience of working effectively with Boards, senior stakeholders and partner organisations
  • The ability to build and lead high performing executive teams.
  • An understanding of how strong organisational culture contributes to better outcomes for patients, staff and communities.
  • The credibility, resilience and judgement required to lead at scale in a complex public service environment.
