To provide for the all-round needs and development of children aged 0-5 years old within the nursery setting. This is achieved through high quality care, play activities and education.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • To be involved in initial visits of children and parents to the nursery and to help them settle in as quickly as possible, with occasional involvement in parent’s evenings.
  • To use initiative to provide an appropriate level of interaction throughout all activities to help each child develop their full potential (this may involve lifting children, pushing prams/pushchairs and moving light nursery equipment) and will include:
    • Planning experiences and opportunities for the children according to their interests and development in accordance with observations made.
    • Setting out play and creative activities in an attractive and appealing manner, including imaginative play areas.
    • Providing varied story time and music sessions relevant to each age group.
    • Evaluating all nursery activities on a regular basis and using any information observed accordingly, informing others if necessary.
  • To encourage all children to interact, share and respect each other, involving all children in activities and comforting children who may become distressed in a calm manner.
  • To ensure all children are supervised at mealtimes and encouraged when necessary.
  • To administer medication and first aid to a child when necessary and in strict accordance with the nursery policy, informing the Nursery Manager of any illness or changes relating to a child.
  • To liaise with parents on a daily basis, providing feedback on their child’s day through the completion of written daily record sheets, observations and developmental records.
  • To use initiative to provide appropriate forms of discipline when necessary, as set out in the nursery policies, and feeding back any comments/problems to the Nursery Manager immediately.
  • To work within a close team environment, assisting colleagues in the completion of daily tasks and delivery/development of activities, passing on relevant information promptly, and making collaborative decisions regarding the supervision of the children in accordance with good practice.
  • To ensure that all children are supervised at all times in strict accordance with the nursery policy, all security measures i.e. alarm, locked doors and gates are in operation at all times, only nominated adults collect the children, and any damaged/dangerous equipment is reported to the Nursery Manager immediately.
  • To take responsibility for the cleaning of nursery equipment, nursery laundry, and attending to the child’s physical needs and well-being i.e. feeding and changing following the nursery.
  • To attend relevant training courses when necessary to ensure a consistently high standard of service delivery.
  • To uphold and comply with all University’s policies and procedures, including those relating to:

    • Sustainability
  • To support the creation of a culture that is highly performance focused and built on a foundation of fairness.
