General Operative will work inside the factory as part of a team of operatives on the ‘stripping’ line.

Leeks that have been freshly harvested from the field come onto the line to be washed, stripped of any outer leaves and roots and cut to size ready for onward packing.

Working environment

The job will take place inside the factory. The jobholder will be required to work on the production line alongside other colleagues.

Because the leeks come into the factory straight from the field, they are dirty and need to be washed, roots cut off and the outer layers taken off until the required specification is achieved.

Sharp knives are used for these tasks.

The factory is cold (approximately 5 degrees) and the floor is wet and muddy. Leek skins can also fall onto the floor, which can make it slippery.

Leeks are part of the onion family and as such, they can produce a strong onion-like smell when cut.

This can irritate some worker’s eyes initially, however any effect usually settles down quickly.

The role requires workers to remain standing on the line for extended periods.

Please note that transport to and from the site is not provided, therefore applicants must be able to make their own travel arrangements.

  • Tasks to be performed
  • Work in the designated area of the stripping line, which could be either washing, cutting or grading the leeks, monitoring the product quality and processing the leeks as required
  • To maintain the required leek quality standards
  • To carry out the initial cutting of the leeks with a sharp knife to the required standard
  • To maintain the required productivity targets set by the manager
  • To make sure all Company personal hygiene standards are maintained
  • To complete specific end of shift cleaning duties within the factory as directed by the manager
  • Depending on the leek quality and availability, other duties may be assigned across our wider factory.
