Murphy delivers a diverse portfolio of rail infrastructure projects for Network Rail, including complex structures, station upgrades, earthworks and drainage schemes.

This role offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging projects within a live railway environment.

Typical projects include

  • Complex structure replacements (bridges, footbridges)
  • Railway drainage and earthworks schemes (including blockades)
  • Station upgrades including Access for All schemes (lift shafts, ramps, footbridges)
  • A day in the life of a Murphy Site Engineer
  • Accurate setting out and dimensional control of works
  • Managing and resolving engineering and technical issues, including TQs
  • Supervising Assistant Engineers and supporting their development
  • Ensuring works are delivered in line with Inspection & Test Plans and quality specifications
  • Producing as-built records, survey data, and redline drawings
  • Managing subcontractors and ensuring quality and programme compliance
  • Monitoring site activities to ensure adherence to health, safety and environmental standards
  • Reviewing drawings and specifications to ensure buildability and completeness
  • Supporting planning of works, materials and plant requirements
  • Preparing risk assessments and method statements (RAMS)
  • Maintaining accurate site records and daily diaries
  • Building strong working relationships with clients, designers and stakeholders

Due to the nature of rail projects, this role will involve

  • Monday to Friday 9h day shifts
  • Weekend and night work as and when required (including possessions and blockades)
  • Overtime paid at 1.3x for nights and weekends
  • Premium rates during Christmas and New Year periods
  • Occasional working away from home with a lodge arrangements

Requirements

  • Must have experience in earthworks, drainage or structures, ideally within a rail environment
  • Experience working for a main contractor, tier one
  • Strong setting-out and surveying capability
  • Proficiency in surveying equipment and minimum basic Auto CAD
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and produce setting out information
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to identify practical solutions
  • Good understanding of construction processes and basic commercial awareness
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Experience working on rail blockades or complex structure installations
  • Experience delivering Access for All or station projects
  • Full UK Driving Licence and CSCS Card
  • Engineering qualification (HNC/HND or equivalent – desirable)
