About the Role
We are seeking an experienced, resilient, and highly adaptable 1:1 Specialist Tutor to deliver a combined academic and therapeutic learning package for a bright 15-year-old student (Year 10) who presents with complex Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
The student is academically capable (working near or at age-related expectations in key areas) but has experienced early childhood trauma.
He requires a strong, nurturing, and trauma-informed approach to help him build focus, manage sensory/regulation needs, and engage safely with learning.
Key Responsibilities
- Academic Delivery (10 hrs/week): Deliver engaging, tailored 1:1 sessions in core subjects (Maths, English, Science) using short, structured "chunked" tasks to accommodate attention needs.
- Therapeutic & Pastoral Support (15 hrs/week): Facilitate life‑skills activities (e. g., cooking, community access), sensory-regulation breaks, and social‑emotional development.
- Behaviour Management & Regulation: Implement clear behavioural boundaries while using gentle redirection and trauma‑informed strategies to manage sudden dysregulation, resistance, or off‑task behaviour.
- Progress & Safeguarding
Reporting: Maintain accurate records of attendance, academic progress, and behavioural milestones, adhering strictly to Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) guidelines.
- Language & Vocabulary Support: Provide patient, targeted vocabulary support to assist a bilingual learner without mistaking language gaps for cognitive difficulty.
- Ideal Candidate Profile
- Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a recognised Specialist Tutoring / SEMH Teaching qualification.
- SEMH & Trauma
Experience: Proven experience supporting young people with early developmental trauma, attachment needs, and challenging behaviours in an educational or alternative provision setting.
- Adaptability & Patience: Strong understanding of sensory breaks, gentle challenging techniques, and chunking tasks to maintain engagement.
- Safeguarding: An up‑to‑date Enhanced DBS (on the Update Service) and a comprehensive understanding of child protection and risks (including exploitation awareness).
- Location: Must be locally based in or near Cambridge for face‑to‑face sessions.
- Experience working with bilingual or EAL students.
- Training in Team-Teach, De‑escalation techniques, or therapeutic education frameworks.
- Experience delivering functional life skills (e. g., cooking, off‑site community visits).

- Competitive Hourly Rates: Inclusive of preparation and local travel.
