We are currently looking for an experienced Health Care Assistant to join our busy 25 bedded ward. We look after a variety of patients who require rehabilitation, complex ongoing medical needs, and complex discharges. Ward 19 generally admits patients from the acute site at Royal Blackburn Hospital once they are medically optimised, and we also do repatriated patients from other hospitals to assist in their rehab and discharge planning.

General duties will include:

  • Assisting patients to meet their hygiene needs both at the bedside and in the bathroom.
  • Providing pressure area care and positional changes for patients who are unable to move themselves.
  • Giving out and collecting meals to patients and assisting those who need support to meet their nutritional requirements.
  • Working alongside a trained nurse to deliver a high standard of nursing care.
  • Helping patients to meet their nutritional requirements through providing meals and hydration in a timely manner.
  • Monitoring and recording nutritional intake on food record charts and fluid balance charts.
  • Following advice from dieticians and SLT.
  • Doing brew rounds throughout the shift.
  • Promoting mobility and working alongside physiotherapists and occupational therapists to help patients recover.
  • Having an awareness of falls prevention and implementing strategies to reduce the number of falls and harm to patients.
  • Monitoring patients' pressure areas to prevent deterioration in skin condition.
  • Assisting with the safe running of the ward alongside other members of the ward team.

You must be able to work within a team and use your own initiative. Flexibility, punctuality, and hard work are essential. An understanding of the role and experience is preferable, but training will be provided. An enthusiasm to develop yourself within the role is desirable. Further knowledge of basic life support, physiological measurement recording, safer handling, and equality and diversity are all areas in which experience is preferable, but training can be provided for the successful candidate. There will also be an opportunity to further develop your knowledge with learning skills like venepuncture and cannulation if desired.

Caring for patients to a high standard in a caring and safe environment is paramount.
