Your new role

As a Building Services Engineer, you will act as the technical lead for several specialist mechanical systems, ensuring they are operated, maintained and managed safely, efficiently and in full compliance with relevant legislation.This is far more than a maintenance role. You will influence future asset strategy, oversee specialist contractors, manage engineering projects and provide expert technical guidance across the organisation.

Key responsibilities will include:

Managing the planned maintenance, inspection and statutory compliance of Pressure Systems, Medical Gases, Air Compressors, Vacuum Pumps and LEV systems.

Acting as the technical expert and appointed person for designated systems, including PSSR, Medical Gases and LEV.

Overseeing specialist maintenance contractors, monitoring performance and ensuring service delivery standards are consistently achieved.

Developing and implementing asset management plans that support short, medium and long-term maintenance and replacement strategies.

Leading maintenance and capital investment projects, including mechanical upgrades and infrastructure improvements.

Conducting audits, inspections and compliance reviews to ensure systems remain safe, reliable and fully compliant.

Providing technical advice and support to engineering teams and stakeholders across the estate.

Investigating faults, identifying root causes and implementing practical solutions to minimise downtime and operational risk.

Supporting emergency response activities and planned out-of-hours engineering works when required.

What you'll need to succeed

To be successful in this role, you'll ideally have experience managing specialist mechanical systems within complex environments such as healthcare, manufacturing, higher education, industrial facilities, utilities, large commercial estates or similar operations.

You'll also possess:

A Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent engineering qualification, or significant relevant industry experience.

Strong knowledge of Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR), PESR, Medical Gas regulations and LEV/COSHH requirements.

Experience managing specialist mechanical assets including pressure systems, compressed air systems, pipework, vacuum systems and ventilation systems.

Experience overseeing specialist maintenance contractors and service providers.

Strong fault-finding and problem-solving abilities within complex mechanical environments.

Experience preparing technical specifications, tender documentation and managing contract delivery.

Knowledge of safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.

Excellent planning, organisational and communication skills.

Professional engineering membership or relevant professional qualifications.

IOSH or NEBOSH certification.

Experience working within higher education, healthcare, public sector or similarly regulated environments.
