- Key Duties of the Post
- To collaborate and work to maintain Breast Surgery services in line with strategic requirements.
- To provide, with the other doctors in the unit, routine and emergency Breast surgery to the Trust, operating a system of mutual out-of-hours cover, and cover for annual, study and professional leave.
- To liaise with medical staff in other specialties and participate in clinical meetings and postgraduate activities in the Trust.
- Assessment and initiation of management of patients in the Breast surgery under the supervision of Consultant staff.
- Prompt assessment of patients referred for admission from Emergency Department and general practitioners.
- Day to day follow-up of patients under the care of the team.
- Prompt response to medical emergencies as required.
- Participation on the relevant out of hours rotas.
- Attendance at regular ward rounds and multi-disciplinary case conferences with the Consultant and Specialty Trainees.
- Assistance with outpatient clinics on a regular basis (as necessary).
- Communication of management plans to nurses and multi-disciplinary team.
- Communication to General Practitioners of discharges or deaths of their patients.
- Dictation of discharge summaries to General Practitioners and completion of other discharge forms for hospital data collection.
- Participation in the Departmental Postgraduate Training Programme.
- Be involved and participate in teaching of other junior doctors, medical students and nurses.
- Contribute to audit and administrative duties.
- Be actively involved in the management of acutely ill medical patients.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
- Undertake, in exceptional circumstances, to be available for such irregular commitments outside normal rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
- To maintain and develop good communications with general practitioners.
- To participate in research in accordance with priorities agreed within the Clinical Groups and the Trust within available resources.
- To demonstrate a firm commitment to the principles of clinical governance, including: Developing and maintaining appropriate systems and practice to ensure effective clinical audit in Breast surgery.
Attending and contributing to the Trusts Clinical Governance Programme.
Participating in the Trusts Clinical Incident Reporting system.
Developing a programme of personal continuing professional education and development, within available resources and within the workload and priorities of the service, as agreed with the Clinical Director and Group Director.
