As our Senior Clinical Pharmacist, you will provide expert clinical pharmacy services across the hospital, ensuring the safe, effective and evidence-based use of medicines throughout the elective surgical patient journey.
This is a pivotal leadership role that combines hands-on clinical practice with strategic service development, governance and quality improvement.
Working closely with consultants, anaesthetists, nursing teams and allied health professionals, you will help shape the future of pharmacy services within our growing independent hospital.
- Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver specialist clinical pharmacy services across elective surgical pathways.
- Undertake comprehensive medication reviews for elective surgical inpatients and outpatients, identifying drug interactions, contraindications and opportunities for medicines optimisation.
- Participate in multidisciplinary pre-assessment clinics across specialties including Orthopaedics, Plastics, Gynaecology and other surgical services.
- Provide expert pharmaceutical advice to consultants, clinicians and the wider multidisciplinary team.
- Independently prescribe medicines within your scope of practice (where appropriately qualified).
- Optimise perioperative medication regimens to improve patient outcomes and reduce avoidable complications.
- Support antimicrobial stewardship programmes and promote evidence-based, cost-effective prescribing.
- Medicines Governance & Patient Safety
- Develop, implement and maintain medicines management policies specific to elective surgical pathways.
- Lead the development of clinical pharmacy standards across the hospital.
- Support compliance with CQC medicines management requirements and regulatory standards.
- Ensure pharmacy services align with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Professional Standards for Hospital Pharmacy Services.
- Develop and implement initiatives to reduce medication-related harm and improve perioperative medicines safety.
- Monitor, investigate and report medication incidents, near misses and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in accordance with MHRA guidance and hospital policies.
- Maintain accurate documentation relating to controlled drugs, high-risk medicines and clinical pharmacy interventions.
- Promote a culture of continuous learning, patient safety and clinical excellence.
- Quality Improvement & Service Development
- Participate in strategic planning for pharmacy services across the hospital.
- Lead clinical audit programmes and benchmark services against Royal Pharmaceutical Society Hospital Pharmacy Standards.
- Identify opportunities to improve medicines optimisation, efficiency and patient outcomes.
- Contribute to service redesign and the development of innovative pharmacy services.
- Support quality improvement initiatives and risk reduction programmes across the organisation.
- Analyse prescribing trends and recommend improvements to clinical practice.
- Operational Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with procurement and stock control teams to ensure the timely availability of medicines.
- Support effective medicines procurement, storage and stock management.
- Ensure compliance with all legal, professional and organisational requirements relating to medicines management.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and pharmacy documentation.
- Support the implementation of new pharmacy systems, policies and procedures where required.
Person Specification
- Essential Master's Degree in Pharmacy (MPharm) or equivalent.
- Current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPh C).
- Significant post-registration hospital pharmacy experience.
- Excellent knowledge of medicines optimisation, medicines governance and clinical pharmacy practice.
- Experience working within surgical or acute hospital services.
- Strong understanding of medicines legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent communication, organisational and leadership skills.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Desirable Independent Prescriber qualification.
- Experience within an independent hospital environment.
- Experience supporting CQC inspections.
- Knowledge of Royal Pharmaceutical Society Hospital Pharmacy Standards.
- Experience leading clinical audits and quality improvement projects.
- Electronic prescribing experience.
- Experience in antimicrobial stewardship programmes.
