We are seeking an experienced Group Insurance & Claims Manager to take ownership of the insurance programme and claims function for a major UK rail freight and logistics business, with responsibility across the UK and elements of the wider European operation.

This is a broad and highly visible role, working closely with senior management, Finance, Legal, Commercial, HSSE, insurers, brokers, loss adjusters and solicitors.

You will play a key role in developing insurance strategy, managing the annual renewal programme, overseeing claims across multiple classes of business and helping to reduce the organisation's total cost of risk through effective insurance, loss prevention, contractual risk transfer and claims management.

The business supports customers across the construction, aggregates, cement, steel, timber, waste, energy and industrial sectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Group's annual insurance renewal programme.
  • Manage the insurance claims function across both insured and uninsured claims.
  • Work closely with brokers, insurers, loss adjusters, solicitors, claimants and their representatives.
  • Support insurers with the investigation and management of claims across multiple lines of insurance.
  • Manage the defence, negotiation and settlement of sub-deductible and uninsured claims.
  • Manage and maintain accurate claims and loss reporting information for financial and management purposes.
  • Provide senior management with professional advice on insurance, claims and risk matters.
  • Analyse claims trends and loss data to identify opportunities for loss prevention and risk reduction.
  • Develop and implement insurance strategies for new business activities and future opportunities.
  • Work alongside Legal and Commercial teams to review contracts and provide strategic insurance guidance.
  • Support the business with contractual risk transfer and insurance requirements associated with new opportunities.
  • Work closely with HSSE and senior management on existing and emerging claims and wider risk management.
  • Manage insurance information relating to static property, rolling stock, insured values and stabling locations.
  • Support the development of enterprise risk management and business continuity initiatives.
  • Monitor insurer claims-handling performance and participate in relevant audits.
  • Produce monthly and quarterly reports in line with internal audit requirements.
  • Liaise with internal and external auditors.
  • Deliver insurance and claims training or briefing sessions where required.

Experience Required

We are looking for an experienced insurance and claims professional with a strong understanding of commercial insurance and the ability to operate confidently with senior stakeholders.

Experience across a range of the following areas would be highly beneficial:

  • Public Liability
  • Motor
  • Employers' Liability
  • Property
  • Rolling Stock
  • Static Property
  • Claims recovery
  • Complex or significant loss management

You will ideally have experience managing relationships with brokers, insurers, loss adjusters, solicitors and other external stakeholders, together with a strong understanding of insurance regulations, legal principles and statutory duties.

Experience within rail, transport, logistics, engineering, infrastructure or another complex operational environment would be advantageous.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with senior management and external insurance partners.
  • Excellent negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Strong technical knowledge of commercial insurance and claims.
  • Good understanding of insurance legislation, regulations and statutory requirements.
  • Strong analytical and reporting capability.
  • Commercially minded, with an understanding of the financial impact of risk and claims.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • A proactive approach with the ability to identify and implement improvements.
  • Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of complex matters.
  • Willingness to travel nationally and undertake occasional overnight stays.
  • A full clean driving licence.

This role requires someone who can combine technical insurance expertise with strong commercial judgement.

You will be proactive, hands-on and comfortable dealing with complex issues from initial investigation through to negotiation, settlement and recovery.

You will be expected to challenge existing processes, identify opportunities to improve the management of risk and claims, and communicate clearly with stakeholders at all levels.

The successful individual will demonstrate:

  • Drive, energy and enthusiasm.
  • A proactive and solutions-focused approach.

You will have significant exposure to senior stakeholders and the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the organisation's total cost of risk, claims performance and future growth.

The organisation is committed to developing its people and providing opportunities for continued professional growth and progression.
