The predicted salary is between 44550 - 54450 £ per year.

To provide dental assessment and treatment for Paediatric patients referred to the services, including treatment under local anaesthetic, inhalation sedation, intravenous sedation, and general anaesthetic.

The post will be full-time and will be subject to the nationally agreed Consultant Contract (October 2003) and the Terms and Conditions of Service governing the appointment of hospital medical and dental staff in England or as subsequently varied by collective agreement. The Consultant contract will be held by the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Programmed Activities will be undertaken in the Birmingham Dental Hospital and Community Paediatric Dental Service clinics across Birmingham and the Black Country.

  • Provision of treatment service for more complex cases that are referred, working in close liaison with medical, surgical and dental colleagues in order to provide an integrated service.
  • Provision of specialist care under sedation for children with behavioural problems and dental phobias.
  • To undertake new patient assessment clinics.
  • To carry out personal treatment sessions on an outpatient basis with access to inhalation sedation if required.
  • Support the present consultant body in the management of patients with special needs and the provision of comprehensive oral care for this group of patients under general anaesthesia as well as on an outpatient basis.
  • Further development of the provision of paediatric general anaesthesia in District General Hospitals, where the service is commissioned to provide them.
  • To develop multidisciplinary clinics within the community setting where required.
  • To provide consultant support for junior staff clinical sessions together with other consultant colleagues.
  • The post holder will be required to apply for a performer number if not already held.
  • To support the clinical teaching of speciality trainees and dental core training programme, providing consultant supervision.
  • To provide supervision of undergraduate dental and school of hygiene and therapy students as appropriate.

The Community Paediatric Dental Service delivers specialist and specialised dental care across a wide geographic area, throughout Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall. General anaesthetic services are also provided in 2 district general hospitals in Walsall and Sandwell.

The priority for this post is the provision of a Paediatric Dentistry Consultant Service for patients referred from hospital colleagues, general medical and dental practitioners and colleagues within BCHC. The post will promote the provision of a more seamless paediatric dental service across the primary and secondary care boundary. The post holder will also be required to support development of the community paediatric dental service and colleagues within the department. The post holder will be involved in undergraduate teaching to dentists and therapists and also support the post graduate specialist paediatric training.

At the commencement of the contract the successful candidate would be expected to agree a job plan with the Head of Service.
